There have been two deaths in the UK potentially linked to vaping, the healthcare products regulator has said. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) said it had received two reports of e-cigarette or vaping associated lung injury (EVALI) in which the patients had died. The regulator added that it had also received 20 reports describing 27 'serious respiratory events' linked to e-cigarettes, including pneumonia and lower respiratory tract infection.

"Public Health England (PHE) said the deaths were 'concerning' and it follows an outbreak of vaping-related illnesses in the US which had led to 60 deaths."

You can bet your bottom dollar that they are concerned after giving their "advice".

yes along the same lines I read on the BBC news health pages I was reading yesterday.

I think as with cigarette smoking the habit remains with the vaping and e cig smoker, its their choice to continue or discontinue, just hope the young virgin lungs think about vaping and e cigs as they do about not smoking cigarettes.

I expect those with already damaged lungs from cigarette smoking would be more at risk if they then go on to vaping and e cigs as a replacement long term.

Yes I experience much more problems with vaping. Sore chest , coughing and breathing difficulties. I smoked cigarettes for years with no problem but when I started vaping I got diagnostic with COPD. 🤨

Likewise Lynn676!

I’d been vaping 8 weeks before being dx’d with Emphysema. It really doesn’t take much to join the dots & I can’t ignore the association with vaping.

Well I wouldn't pay much attention to any Daily Mail report to be honest. They are hardly known for unbiased reporting! 2 out of 3.6 million isn't bad is it? I suspect the number of ciggie smokers dying in that time is er..just a bit higher...

You really hate vaping don't you?

We have been here before: What I am against is the substitution of one habit for another.

As a tool for quitting smoking and then discarding vaping, which is what it was designed to do, is great.

Just changing the habit and using them full time instead is what is dangerous and that is what I am against, the risk for harm is still there.

It's your insistence that vaping (normal vaping) is just as harmful as smoking that annoys me. As vapes don't contain the dozens of dangerous chemicals that cigarettes do it is impossible.

Maybe not ,but they contain just as many different chemicals who's properties get changed with heating, what may be harmless to be consumed by eating them does not mean they are harmless when vapourised by heating and then inhaled.

I will also say that the Daily Mail was not the only paper to report this but the others are behind a pay wall.

I totally agree with you hypercat54.There are many more dying of lung cancers with the old ciggie than the vapourers.I have now come off the ciggie and gone back to vaping.I was vaping for 5 years and went back to smoking due to being upset with my husband having a nasty accident. It was really hard going back to vaping and stopping smoking, but, I've now managed it so I have no more comments, but, to agree with you totally. I hope that none of our friends here on this site get frightened with this news. Suzanne xx

Only an abstract of the article from Pulse Today - a medics resource. Access to full content requires registration.

MHRA yesterday issued all GP’s with a 4 question checklist relating to vaping habits.

The story is starting to appear in lots of other papers now.

'Public health officials have reiterated that regulated e-cigarettes carry a 'fraction' of the risk of smoking, after a series of reports highlighting potential dangers'. The report also says this!

Time and countless possible deaths, in the future will tell all. The tobacco companies made all these claims of safety once before in the50's/60's, with doctors even promoting smoking.

hypercat54 profile image
hypercat54 in reply to2greys

Well it's anyone with a vested interest making these claims, but public health officials!

But the doctors promoting smoking!

in reply tohypercat54

and the sales on vaping a heavily invested interest

Well I will actually say it, yes very much a vested interest the safety report was paid for by the vaping industry, that statement is backed up by the Lacet.

E-cigarette ‘safety’ study was written by industry funded scientists, Lancet warns.

I have said about everything I can say in other posts, but will reiterate that everyone is free to smoke or vape or whatever they want but what really bothers me is people trying to convince others vaping is completely safe when there is no long term evidence to prove that. We can speculate all we want about whether it has fewer chemicals or safer chemicals which seems to be based more on opinion than fact. None of us are doctors or scientists or researchers and if you do enough searching on the internet you can usually find an article that will support your opinion no matter what it is, but that doesn’t always make it a fact.

Put in context with cigarette smoking it is...? ....daily,....? annually ? In an ideal world we would only have stimulants that were harmless and none impacted on health. We (currently) have no such world and should not discriminate on numbers that are substantially (actually massively) less harmful than conventionally known stimulants - i.e. similar critique with tobacco, alcohol use and indeed conventional medical medications - comparable numbers please!
