I’m originally from the northeast and new year was always a traditional affair with someone first footing . It was supposed to be a dark good looking gentleman who was the first to step over your threshold after the clock chimed 12. If our family didn’t have a particularly good year I remember my grandma blaming the person who was the first foot as not being suitable.
Grandmas eh?
So glad you found the site and have found it helpful.
My late father was always roped in to be the first footer, carrying a bit of coal. He was tall and dark.....
In West Wales no woman was allowed out before noon on New Years Day....my grandmother had to feed the hens, and fetch the coal in as she was a widow. A neighbour saw and told her off and got a sharp answer back.
Echoing everything you mention about this site! We’re all lucky to have such a valuable resource with such a pleasant & informative atmosphere - I’m pretty thankful to my respiratory nurse for directing me here as well as the members who make it what it is.
Very best wishes for a Merry Christmas 🎄 & a Happy New Year!
I too was feeling so alone until I found this site astragal - How lucky for us to have so much support and kindness! Wishing you best wishes and a Happy Christmas xx
