A very individual thing, some are able to work on longer that others for all sorts of reasons. Physical fitness and state of mind can be big contributors. I still work full-time at 69 years with an FEV1 of 28 %,

Why? Because I can, it keeps me fit and active. It keeps my mind occupied and distracted from thinking about my condition. I have a reason to get out of bed every day. I keep my sense of independence and very real, normal lifestyle.

Whilst it is hard to keep going I personally find it invaluable and it works for me. Only you know whether you can gain any benefit from either working on or retiring and what you want from life.

I am not trying to influence you one way or the other, but I think it is a one way street. Once you have given up your job, it will be extremely unlikely if not impossible to find another job given poor health, a decision that needs to be carefully made . There will come a time for me to "dial back" the amount of work I do and inevitably have to give it up.

Hi the-db, I think it depends on when you think you have had enough. I worked until I could get my state pension at 63 as couldnt afford to retire without it. I love being retired, the freedom it gives me is wonderful and time to do the things I want to do. I was diagnosed with bronchiectasis a couple of years ago and then started with rhuematoid arthritis so it has been a blessing being retired, although I feel a bit robbed as there is still so much I want to do and dont feel capable at the moment, but have plans to improve my situation. It is all down to how you feel. I love being at home and going out and have alot off hobbies so dont get bored. I do miss the money and the people I worked with but this is a different stage in my life and dont regret retiring x

I was working until last December in my head I thought if I can still work then I’m doing okay, but eventually it became such a toil to get to work and then finally admitting I just wasn’t fit anymore .. I’m only 57 so was a bit scary but now I love being retired and have loads of hobbies and friends and family .. xx

I retired last year hated it , it is a personal thing I could never get used to it so got another job and went back to it, it’s as 2 greys says working keeps me feeling better and fitter no time to think .

I’m retiring in December, I’m 69. Retiring because there is no enjoyment any more. 🐞
