FV1/FVC MYTH

There is a lot of false information circulating in these boards in regard to FV1/FVC ratio. People have to know that this ratio NORMALLY DECREASE WITH ADVANCED AGE (above 60 to 65 years old). So, for example, a 70 years old man with a ratio of 68 might be PERFECTLY NORMAL! Plenty of recent studies have shown this, over and over.

I'll be back, I'm short on time...

Welcome Pierre fountain of all knowledge, don't rush back because we are not waiting with bated breath for your next announcement. :)

P.s we are all well aware that lung function and capacity decreases with age.

I think perhaps you are referring to FEV1/FVC not FV1/FVC .

As skischool says we are all well aware that lung function and capacity decreases with age.

We are also aware that the figure that matters is set against Predicted Results that take into account age, sex, height and weight.

Whilst we may not be doctors, we are very experienced. More than you might give us credit for.

There also is a lack of your profile on the web which I also find disconcerting.

Height and weight measurements have always been taken before each of my pulmonary function tests.

O2Trees profile image
O2Trees in reply to 2greys

I was corrected here 2G for saying weight is part of the fev1 etc. Cant remember who by. I think they do your weight just to check in health terms - are you maintaining a healthy weight, are you overweight making it harder to breath. That kind of thing.

2greys profile image
2greys in reply to O2Trees

I asked about this and told that it was taken into consideration as it affects your breathing along with the accuracy the test, breathing ability and lung function being different. Good lung function with being overweight can produce poor breathing ability which can alter the results. The FEV1% should remain the same though, but a full PFT test inside the cubicle is made up of quite a few other tests.

My last full PFT took around 40 mins to complete and was quite exhausting especially the part that required you to pant with a resistance applied to the mouthpiece airflow, like suffocating with a pillow pressed against your face.

Susie-54 profile image
Susie-54 in reply to 2greys

I hate to closed valve panting the most. It messes with my head and I always get in trouble for that one.

O2Trees profile image

Yes 2G, I do understand that. Just surprised at the different things we get told.

megshafer profile image
megshafer in reply to 2greys

According to a Pulmonary Therapist, who gives PFTs at the hospital. Height/Weight/Sex and Ethnicity all are equated in a complete Pulmonary Function Test. (FEV1/FVC, etc.). I just made a phone call!! 2greys is very correct regarding weight, be it too much as well as too little. P.S. that is exactly why they take your height and weight before a PFT test. I do not know why ethnicity would matter. That one I have not figured out.

Take care!! ⛵⛵⛵⛵

I tend to ask a lot of questions whenever I have hospital appointments, I have a curious mind, I often have in depth discussions with the consultants too, it is all part of how I learn. Thank you for taking the time to confirm exactly what I was told. Thinking about it the PFT dept that I attend is always so busy to the point of being manic, that I cannot see that taking height and weight would be done without a connection to the tests, thinking about it I recall they are entered into the computers that give the results. Again curiosity makes it a must to view those screens to note the results.

2greys, I can not imagine a day where I learned nothing.

I had my weight checked along with height before spirometry tests. I saw an online media news item (last week I think) that Drs in western Australia have discovered that in very overweight people adipose (fat) tissue can be deposited in lung tissue, so carrying extra weight makes breathing more difficult in more ways than one.

What these statistics do not answer why there is this “natural” progression. I am one to think that as we add the years on all the effects of pollution, job exposure and repeated infections finally take a toll. This progression is not natural at all but a result of our toxic environment.

skischool profile image
skischool in reply to Cary1977

We are born to die, take away all the pollution and all of the diseases on the planet and we will still die and natural progressive failure of our organs, lungs included is part of that process,we just try to slow down the progression with healthy living. :)

My maternal grandfather was an engineer by trade, inthe 20, 30, 40's, they didn't give a stuff about how the conditions in which they worked were, just having a job was all the respect they needed.

He smoked for 70yrs, he had emphysema. He most likely caught it in WW2 in Japan in the occupation forces, as he was not far out from Nagasaki after the bomb obviously. Getting down inches from the ground hour after hour, year after year, nose right next to radiation filled ground! Diesel infused soil, from tanks, buses, etc. Smoking didn't kill him.

Lol, exactly! I will be 58 in about 3/4 weeks! I realistically don't expect to see 65, so, l will never experience ADVANCED OLD AGE! GOD! imagine how all the U.S. presidents must feel!

IMAGINE HOW THE QUEEN FEELS?!?

megshafer profile image
megshafer in reply to Fleurbaby

It is a fact that everyone's lung function starts going down starting at about age 30....we have many more lung liters than we imagine. That's if you smoke or not smoke. I recently spoke with a Coroner, yep, a Coroner at a Women's Luncheon. The majority of people over the age of 35 during autopsy show mild to moderate emphysema or at the least mild emphysemous changes, with or without being smokers of anything!! We live and have lived in a polluted world. It affects lungs and hearts! They never were diagnosed, most probably never would be. Nor, know they even had a disease. She would know!!

I have a pretty good feeling, you shall have many more birthdays than 58!!!

Thought you'd find that interesting!

Have a very happy Birthday...

Take good care,

Think positive thoughts!!!

A little American History lesson, enjoy!!-

P. S. The average age of a President of the United States....is aged 55 years and 3 months. Ronald Reagan was the oldest, and John F. Kennedy was the youngest, age 43. You must be at least age 35 years of age to be a U.S. President,

Feel free to fact check me. xx

Fleurbaby profile image
Fleurbaby in reply to megshafer

Lol. Tongue in cheek about presidents! Constitutional ammendment is a lot more common than we think. 2 terms only came in because of jealousy in the popularity of the likes of roosevelt. Imagine if people had known how disabled he was, would he have won 3/4 terms?

I doubt it!

I believe that pretty much no one over the age of 25 will possess lung abilities over 80%, or so I have been informed, it is mainly down to an individual's personal health and experience.

Thank you for your comments. Take care! ❤💛👍🇳🇿🇳🇿🦋🦋

Was just sharing, what I know, and have learned. I love history. All history!!

A Woman Coroner, I thought was pretty cool, too. She's a elected position!! She has been the Coroner in her County since 1996, right out of Med school, and, she has a thriving private practice, too!!

You be happy!

My understanding is that while they take your weight prior to doing the test it is not actually in the calculation of the predicted value. Most, if not all, of the online calculators that will give you a predicted value do ask for height, age, gender, but not weight. I think they check it as if you are losing weight from one test to the next if may be indicative of progression or perhaps another health issue.

I concur. The funny thing about the Coroner was, (she was really nice, and open as you see!) She didn't seem to be shocked that all these younger people show emphysema. She said, in most people progression is pretty slow, decades. Especially, if you dont smoke or quit, and stay away from anything that creates fire, pollution can not be escaped. Most people will never know they have it, was interesting too.

If I hadn't had the CT scan for my gallbladder, would have I?
