I keep getting bouts of Cystitis, I've bought the powders from the Chemist but they don't seem to be working. I'm 75 yrs old, could it probably be an age thing, as when I use to get the attacks when younger they didn't take long to go away. Just wondering if anyone has any remedies that has worked for them. Thank you.

Cranberry juice is said to help but I do wonder if you need a course of antibiotics. Hope it clears soon, not a pleasant thing to have.
It's taken two lots of antibiotics to clear mine - well, I hope it's cleared it, I took the last dose today (fingers crossed). Think maybe you should see your doc.
Need to see a Dr. some quite effective antibiotics available. Have heard that Cranberry juice helps, met quite a few older people who drank a glass every day as a preventative. Do not want to let it get hold for too long before seeing a medic. good luck.
Hi Jansy. Sorry to hear this from a fellow sufferer! It's not necessarily age as I have recurrent cystitis and I'm 41. It's led to kidney infections on two occasions.
For me, the turning point seems to have been when they finally sent a sample to the lab to test exactly what strain of bacterium was causing it. They then found the best antibiotic to treat it. Until then they'd just been throwing generic antibiotics at it which was just leading to incomplete eradication and the infection coming back time and time again only with more resistance. So I ended up with a cystitis superbug.
Touch wood, after five courses of antibiotics including one two-week course of the right kind, I've been infection free for three months. I hope it stays that way! In essence, if you have bouts that keep coming back or lasting for a very long time, you need to get a sample sent to a lab so they can target treatment properly. Best of luck and much sympathy! Unfortunately, some people just seem to be more prone to this sort of thing than others. xx
After 12 courses of anti biotics in 12 months one of the doctors at my surgery decided to send me to a urologist and I had a camera job done - then a different anti biotic for twelve days - wait 2 weeks - back to urologist and another camera job done - not had a bout in the last 3 years !!
I just got over a miserable UTI (urinary tract infection)...my physician prescribed Doxycline, I am allergic to all the common medications for such. But, it worked and I feel so much better. Had not had one for a good while. Cranberry juice, lots of water, no caffeine, was told that was a great irritation to the problem. But, I seemed to be the one irritated from lack of caffeine!! Lol
Please take good care, I personally would go see a your GP or your Nurse Practioner. Better to be safe!!
Meg
Make sure you drink plenty of fluids (not alcohol) - 2+ litres a day spread throughout the day. Some people find cranberry juice very helpful, although the latest research suggests it may not be that effective for all.
I also read that research. Another thing to consider is the effect cranberry juice can have on warfarin. Apparently cranberry juice may affect the efficiency of warfarin making it less effective. Something for those taking warfarin to thin the blood to consider.
A warm glass of water with local honey and a bit of lemon juice each a.m.. Also, have your Vit D level checked. 2016, I had one uti episode after another. Was D depleted. When my D levels got back to acceptable levels, a lot of things cleared up, including uti's. The honey & lemon drink keeps everything clear. J
Think a visit to the doctor is a must. I used to make up my own pearl barley which helps alot, hope you get better soon x
Yea- a visit to the doctors I think x
The powders alter the acidity of the urine, but that might not be enough to remove any bacteria, though they might work of it's simply irritation. Cranberry juice is an effective antioxidant, so can help clear up infections.
An antibiotic like ciprofloxacin might solve it, but you may have a bladder restriction which is preventing complete voiding, and that can lead to repeat infections. A lot of people (like me) have diverticula of the bladder, without actually knowing it, and these can retain urine.
Definitely worth a check-up with a urologist.
Hi. I suffer fairly regularly and take D-Mannose supplement daily. It helps and taken when I have a UTI it can actually clear it up quite quickly. Antibiotics are the best for clearing it but doctors reluctant to prescribe due to antibiotic resistance. Drink at least 2 ltrs water daily and 3 ltrs when you have infection. I find the powders help with the burning but don't cure it
I used to gets cystitis quite often and I am 75 also. A friend told me to stop wearing tights and definitely not tights and trousers or jeans. Something to do with air circulation. !!! I dare not think of anything else It definitely worked for me. Although if you are suffering just now you should get a course of antibiotics
Yes, please see your GP and get the proper antibiotics for this! I wasted time trying to ged rid myself and, ( I really don’t want to scare you) but mine turned into ‘urosepsis’, which you really don’t want to happen! Please go to your docs as soon as! ( I am same age as you). Good luck😊
