I use acidophilus pre & probiotic. I was advised any that is kept in the fridge will be fine just find one that suits you. Don't take it with a hot drink, heat kills them.

I was advised by a doctor, it was taking a PPI for many years that was one of the causes of osteoporosis. If needed I no longer take any of the 'prazoles ' and use Slippery Elm instead which I find just as effective. Wish I had been aware of this a decade ago.

Yes, i always take during & after antibiotics - though really you should report to your gp as your problem could be unrelated to the Azith.

I also have a lot of live yogurt daily (it has to be live, organic, the over processed won't do).

The abs are killing off all the healthy gut bacteria as well as keeping the baddies at bay

Supermarkets sell it: check the cartons and look for 'live' on them.

Sorry Ergendl, I buy the Yeo organic yoghurt but thought this was something different, thank you x

There are pre- and pro-biotic drinks which make claims about their efficacy, and some are better than others. They tend to rely on very high numbers of good bacteria to ensure some pass through the acid in the stomach to reach the gut. Normal live yoghurts are much cheaper and can help too but make no claims.

Symprove has medical endorsement and is currently undergoing trials for Parkinson’s Disease. It is a liquid and reaches the gut because it is not destroyed by the acidity in the stomach.

If you suffer from a severe lung disease like me and 'want two kill two birds with one stone' take Lactobacillus Rhamnoses LGG and Lactobacillus planatarium.

Hi Alice 70 - I suffer severe pain and bowls probs when on antibiotics and steroids. The cramps take my breath away so have been strongly advised to take a probiotic (by doctors) to restore the healthy bacteria that is destroyed by this medication. Live yoghurts are good but I can't take them as I can't tolerate cows' milk.

I second S.Boulardi and take it every day. Also use Probiotic Everyday Extra and Immunity one from the Optibac range. Unfortunately they are expensive but do work.

Some foods that contain probiotics are: yogurt with live/active cultures to be effective. Unpasteurized pickles and sauerkraut. Miso, tempeh and sourdough bread.

I guess we are all different Darceydoo and perhaps they work really well for me as I practically never take antibiotics. It was when I started to take probiotics for Immunity that I noticed a real positive change in a respiratory condition, and felt the healthiest in years!

However, I've always been advised that when you have an infection, which requires antibiotics, that's the exact time to take probiotics to ward off gut problems, thrush etc as that's when your good bacteria gets killed off. That's the advice from the nutritionists at Optibac. In fact they produce different types of probiotics and there is a specific one to take at the same time as antibiotics.
