Impending heatwave- ideas to stay safe

Hi everyone

Last year I had trouble breathing a couple of days when it was very hot. I was able to stay indoors, and got a few fans but still it affected me badly.

I am already worried about the heatwave thats on the way- I need to get thermal curtains for my living room and I have bought a few more fans. Perhaps we could share any ideas on staying cool we have here?

Thanks

A dish of icecubes in front of your fan will cool the air passing across it [do leave enough room in the dish for them to melt] If its hotter outside than inside don't open any windows.Ice cold water in a hot water bottle will be cool in bed for a while.Place your wrists under cool running water to cool the blood.Eat several small meals as digesting a large meal can raise your temperature.Do any essential chores early in the day.Drink plenty of fluids. Most of all be kind to yourself and take it easy.Perhaps a good excuse to put your feet up [helps also if you get swollen ankles in the heat] and eat lots of icecream whilst watching the tennis at wimbledon on the tv :-) xx

Wear cotton next to your skin as this helps to wick away sweat. Put cold compresses on your forehead, nape of neck and inside of wrists - cold damp flannels will do.

Although I have thermal backed curtains in my house, I tend to leave them open so that I can open fanlight windows front and back and let the air pass through. When very hot, I stay in the room which only has a north-facing window as this is the coolest room in the house.
