Bronchiectasis after moving to Malta

I was diagnosed about 2 years ago but looking back, I had chest problems for about 2 years beforehand. Anyway after a 3 year struggle, finally managed to move permanently to Malta last September.

Took loads of medicine with me and got a referral to chest consultant in January but had to wait until yesterday for the appointment. In Malta you have to see a consultant before you can get free medication.

I was quite impressed. The consultant asked for lung function tests there and then. She saw me afterwards and has changed my medication slightly. Still ventolin but increased steroid puffer and also new medicine Bromhexine. Immediate additional prescription for a pneumonia jab.

The only downer is that my lung function tests said that I had the lungs of a 90 year old (not good as I am only 63). However, as I pointed out to my husband, I don't feel any different from when I saw the doctor and now the weather is starting to heat up, I definitely will improve (winter and staying in is not good for me).

Hi I was diagnosed with mild copd at 54 and was told then I had the lungs of an 89 year old. This doesn't really mean anything so don't worry about it. x

You are probably not an dfferent to when you saw your doctor. It annoys me so much when they inform patients about their FEV1 in terms of lung age and woe betide the first one who ever does this with me. They don’t usually do that with bronchiectasis. Ask them next time for the predicted and not give you the results by age. I can’t see how this can be helpful in any way.

Hi, After rehab I try to do the exercises every day and do the chest exercises . Ventolin is generally two times twice a day with a standby use when needed. What a lucky person to be in Malta with such good weather. Well done!!!
