Copd and chest pain

Does any one else get chest pain when very out of breath or is it just me? I have had heart tests every time I mention this but all is ok there but nobody tells me what pains are. I have always thought it was to do with my breathlessness but can’t find answers hope some one can enlighten me. Thank you ,Micky x

I always have a sore or painful chest mainly linked to chronic indigestion at times. However my chest does get painful if I get very short of breath or have been working round the house. I have severe COPD with 20% lung function so you are not alone. There are many of us like this I I believe it’s part of our lung decease. I’ve come to accept all my aches and pains and look on the bright side that one day there will be a cure or a medicine to reduce these effects. Take care and hope you feel better soon. If not be like lots of us look on the bright side and keep smiling

Yes I get severe soreness of the chest and lungs when I’m cold. I try to keep warm even though the family think I have the house too warm. I don’t go out much when it’s cold , wet and damp

Hello Mickyjoan4, in my experience mild chest pain is quite common when breathing is laboured, also with varied chest infections. Another cause of pain is inflammation in the lungs which feels a little like pluresy and can take some time to clear it can often be due to extra coughing too. I too have had heart tests at such times which are normal & the stats. Only thing I have ever been told is I have thickening of the heart muscle due to long standing highish blood pressure but does not interfere with my health status. Hope this info helps, if the pain get worse or more pronounced at anytime then call 111.

Thank you Katie. My doctor sent me for a heart scan because he thought one side was a bit enlarged, it did come back as ok. I do feel reassured that it is pretty common, I know it’s not nice but I can put up with it knowing it is sort of normal if you see what I mean! Ty very much again x

Used to,until saw Doctor at Papworth Hosp. He suggested l blew out all or as

much air as l could, then took in a very short breath and did the same. You would

be amazed at the amount of air you can blow out after the short breath. He suggested

l do this 4-5 times,as it is the trapped air which is coursing the pain.

You can only but try ??

Hi MickyJoan,

Likewise, I would get chest pains intermittently and fleeting, of different sorts depending. Always there is a heart test. Always my heart tests very strong and healthy. All I have been told is that yes, some with copd have those chest pains; but also that the lungs have no nerve endings to sense pain, so that it must be something else. Like your situation, they don' t say what it is, I think because they don't know.

It helps to differentiate the type of pain...constant, fleeting, transient, intermittent, etc. as well as dull, burning, stabbing, electrical-like, etc. Intuitively I feel it is lymph nodes that are aching in my case. Also the pain isn't always near the heart, but sometimes on other side of the chest. Exercise, massage, yoga, hot compresses or baths, immune boosters such as vitamins etc. all help the lymph nodes.

Thank you Robert, mine is usually dull and burning but can get stabbing, I do hate it but try to remain calm. It doesn’t always last long although sometimes the dullness is for a few days. It usually comes on when I get very out of breath but keep on because I have to finish what I’m doing. X

Hi Micky I also suffer chest pain, sometimes it’s due to a lot of coughing or infection but at times it just seems like there’s no reason for it. I buy heat patches you can get them for as little as a pound for 2 and they do last 8 hrs , I place it in the middle of a small hand towel give it a rub and it’s usually really hot in half an hr. I place it on my chest for about 20 minutes as I read not to leave it longer than that. It gives me comfort and In between doing that I hold a big soft feeling scarf on my chest. Every little helps I think i also get a lot of pain around my lungs that I use the heat patches for again it gives me comfort and eases muscle pain. Don’t worry if you’re family think your house is too hot always try and keep yourself comfortable. Take care 🌹🌹

My family always say my house is hot ! I do try to keep my chest warm as it can help and also when I relax, perhaps it’s muscular, who knows ! X. I might try a heat pad ty x
