Can anyone tell me about these results plz fev1/fvc 73% fev1/vc 77% does this mean I have copd

Hi the FEV1 is your lung function and is the most important number. It is the one where you breathe out hard and long. VC stand for vital capacity, and FVC is the same with the word forced in front. This means you have 77% lung function which is based on the average for your sex, height, and age and is not necessarily out of 100%.

From your results you have mild copd and are at stage 1 (some call it moderate but you are at the very top of this range if so). I am told I am mild with an FEV1 in the mid 70's and at this stage suffer few symptoms apart from some breathlessness and tiredness. x

How long do u live for with it like that stage just little bit worried x?

Oh forever I should think! My doctor told me that something else would get me first ie old age. x

Good. Having said that lead as healthy a lifestyle as you can, take any meds religiously. If you have any chest infections or flare up (exacerbations) make sure you deal with them promptly as they can cause further damage. It is a progressive disease but normally only progresses very slowly and these measures will give you the best chance to stay mild.

Ask your doctor/nurse to refer you to PR (Pulmonary Rehabilitation) which is a course once or twice a week for around 10 weeks. There will be a respiratory nurse you can ask questions of, and exercises especially tailored to help with the disease.

Stay with us too as we are the 'experts' on living with lung disease and ask any questions you want to. x

Fev1 is based on your gender, age and HEIGHT, Bev. Weight doesnt come into it.

Here is a link to a calculator that allows you to put in your information and have it calculate what someone your age race and height without lung disease would have. It should be noted that there are several reference values used by different places but results are similar.

According to the link below a 57 year old Caucasian that is 181 cms in height should have an FEV1 of 3.87 with a lower limit of normal of 3.05, and an FVC of 5.08 and a lower limit of normal of 4.11.
