I travel by train and use passenger assistance. They are really lovely people.
I use a hefty wheeled walking frame (my princess chair). It's sturdy, stable and I use it on the local buses, for small amounts of shopping. However, it's rather large even when folded, so difficult to fit in cars, in the luggage space on trains etc.
My daughter has bought me a lighter weight, umbrella fold wheeled walker for travel.
I'm off to visit her in early January so I can collect the new frame then.
Oh dear! I need the princess chair to get there (My home in Hampshire to hers in South Wales) but then I'd have two frames on the return journey.
No problem. I rang passenger assist, explained my dilemma, the have the solution.
The use of a railway's own wheelchair at my home station and at the change of trains, in Reading, on my way. Use my new walker on the return journey.
Fantastic service. The thought of trying to walk across a busy station, struggling to breathe and with nowhere to sit for a break...
It really is nice to know that help is there and willingly given.
For anyone needing to use the railways to travel but worried about managing their luggage, walking frames, finding their way in large stations or any other travel help they need I can only say again how good Passenger Assistance is.
To contact them 0800 022 3720 the person who answers transfers your call to the team managing your departure station eg Great Western. The help is free.
