I am in recovery from a double lung transplant. I am so fortunate to be able to breathe properly again! However all the drugs I am using are ruining my gums, I am 65 so I know teeth and gums do get worse, but is there anything that will prevent this gum deterioration.

Hi, congratulations on your new lungs!
I'm afraid I can't help so look forward to your replies, I've heard and/or read that continued use of steroids can have this side effect. All the best to you. P
Hi. Ross When I started. Going to. Royal Brompton, the 1 st thing I said. Can. You help me with my teeth. My specialist looked at me like I was nothing and smirked. Like. How did I. Have the front to ask about my teeth. The reason I tried to explain. Was so I could eat better. And be able to chew. He dismissed me. I started dental work exactly 2 yrs ago. I had to go private. This as been great but. Now Iam so bad. With my breathing Iam not able to get to. My dentist. My new. Dr at. Harefield. Stated. That. He wanted me to complete my dental work. Mainly cos. Risk of infection. After. My. Possiable lung. Transplant. But. All this as. Annoyed me because I've been diagnosed with IBS. My old. Denise. NHS. One applied for. Speial dentral treat me to from. Dental hospital. This was declined 3 times. My. Mother passed away 2 half yrs ago. And. Left me a nice amount and I thought how best I could spend it and have somthink to show for it. So I went to Dentise. Who. Took pity on me. He was. Shocked that a person with such serious breathing problem could not be treat on NHS. He. Quoted me. £11. 700. For. 9 implants. That. A full. Set of porcelain top. Bottom. Back four. Left and right. As I have my own 6 teeth in lower front jaw So. The price. He only. Told he. Sec. to say. That. Seeing that it was. Going to. Very. Stressful. The dental work because my breathing andthat I had. All the. Amount that he would do for £8000😜👍🏽😁 Bless. I wanted to give him a big. Sloppy kiss. But. I had to. Refrain my self. Right. Since then. 2 yrs ago. I've keep. About. 8 0r. 9. Appointment.s. Missed. A good few and. Rebooked. Near enough. There. Next. Week. And. Next. Month. So. I hope to have. That. Glow in the dark. Look. But. Teeth. I suppose to be white. But. I think I'll hate um. Any way they not for looks. Just so I can chew. And have more choice. As to what I can eat. That. Dr. At. The. Brompton. It really felt like he was looking down on me. Like you have come here for yr. breathing. But asking me about. Teeth. Like I was wrong Was. I. A friend of mine. Woke up from having. A broken leg set in. Surgary. He's. Blood flow to. He's gut.s stopped. Andd they. Had to remove. A lot of. It. So. Chewing. Food is. Important. Oh ,lastly. I heard. Read. Using. Eletric. Toothbrush or. Sonic. One can help with tooth and gum lose. Best. Go to. A good. Dentise. If you can afford to. If. Not. Find. One that. Does. Pay plan. Most of them. Do.
Oh you have been through it, and I am pleased that you have found a dentist that will help you, and make it more comfortable for you to eat what you want and look better too! What i have found is that each department ie Dentists do teeth Lung consultants do Lungs Heart consultants to Heart.....but they never mix!! I felt guilty putting i needed help with my teeth but I do and i am also glad i can breathe so much better now, its a new life! If your Mum has left you that money use it to help yourself, and see how they can help you with breathing. Are you on Oxygen or inhalers, sounds like you will need some help. Please check with your doctor to see what help is there for you. Good Luck I wish you well.
Hi Ross, Same here, waiting for Double Transplant, I do and have always Been conscious of my Good teeth, Now, with meds for pre Trx, and of course Age, My Gums are receding quicker than I would like. Please tell us if you do find a "Cure". & Vice Versa. I do hope your Feeling Well and Coping. Much Love. Carolina XXXX
Have you spoken with your dentist? My husband has special toothpaste on prescription but I think that may be for over sensitivity that may be caused by receding gums.
Hi ross-35, I have a great dentist and have spoken to him about my receding gums and he has had a look but unfortunately informed me that once the process starts there is no stopping it, for me at the moment it is just my 2 top front teeth that are loose and it is a little difficult to eat but so I am very careful what I eat but being a vegitarian dose help as I don't have to contend with meat products.
Good luck 😀 T
Brave you going through that.
This is just to say I hope you find an answer quickly albeit I cannot offer any advice. Stay positive.
Hi ross-35, so pleased that your double lung transplant has gone well for you and your breathing has improved. I know that you can have an operation for receding gums, you can look this up on you tube. My dentist gave me Colgate duraphat 5000 toothpaste which hardens the enamel and could perhaps help, I use this at night before I go to bed and it seems to have taken away the sensitivity from receding gums, speak with your dentist. Some dentists also do a perioblast , worth considering, but expensive. Hope you find a solution. Irene x
Hi Irene thank you for your comments. I am going to dentist next week and i will ask about the blast you mentioned. x
Hi Ross, Firstly I hope you are living a Good life after your Transplant. I am still waiting for mine and I am approaching 67 next week. Did you ever find a solution to Receding Gums? I had my Tracking appointment on Tuesday at QE Birmingham, Dr. T said I am much the same as my prior assessment which is Good , But I get a bit Fed up with waiting.. I love to hear Good news about Pro Lung Transplants , it inspires me to keep the Good fight with my Exercises and Future Life. Hope my message finds you well & Happy Ross. Love n Hugs Carolina XXX

Have you made a list of your contacts? Preparation is the key....Bear in mind you could be in hospital for longer than you expect...I was 5 months... so prepare.
Don't give up hope and do as many exercises as you can..that is the main reason i got my transplant. because i looked after my body and mind.. I wish you well and hope you don't have long now, but when its your time it will be your time!! xxx
