if you don't mind please, I've asked another person as well. I noticed you said you quit smoking 9 years after you've been diagnosed. do you know how fast Emphysema progresses? I am absolutely terrified, my Hubby was just diagnosed 2 months ago. It was found on a routing chest X ray, he is not on any meds nor does he use inhalers "YET" he has quit smoking 22 years ago. I'm just wondering how fast it's going to get bad. Phoebe

Well done. I believe that nicotine is more addictive than heroin. Good for you. Has anyone noticed the advertisements from Philip Morris? All masquerading as anti-smoking but really about getting people onto e-cigrettes. I first came across this from a link from a member of a COPD forum to a website that showed how many people in your area smoked, it all looks very scientific and bona fide, and appeared to be about helping folk to give up, until in the small print I saw 'Philip Morris.' And my hackles rose. Hmmm....

Well done thats the first major hurdle over. I gave up smoking before I was diagnosed but took three tries. I was diagnosed a few years later with COPD. I now have a weight problem which is not so easy to overcome, suggest you try exercise next as that is another one that causes limitations you may only be able to do small amounts and short walks are better than nothing . Good luck with it.

Hi, congratulate yourself for having given up the cigs, now keep it up. Contact your local pulmonary rehab team to get on a session and to tell you what exercising you should do at home.

The diet should be as many of the 5 a day as possible. Plenty of green vegetables do away with fast & junk food (even it is promoted as good) Common sense eating, also keep an eye on your weight.

All of this you can discuss with your GP. There are many organisations out there that can help& point you in the right direction, use them.

Well done Son. That No 1 is the NUMBER ONE. Although it will NOT cure your emphasema it should stabilise it. Your Asthma will improve. Make sure you wear a face mask when you go out walking and exisise. Exisise is very important to you. Keep it up. What I do a lot is to go to a large supermarket and walk around every isle for exisise. You don't have to buy anything, mybe the odd Durex.

I am 76 been smoking since 14 have stopped now for 2 weeks and feel the benefits of it. Caughing stopped, not using my inhailers very much. I suffer with COPD and Emphasema breathing so good now. I go for a walk every morning.

You keep it up or I'll smack your arse. Ha Ha.

Oh I’m so proud of you- really. Like most people here I do know how hard it is! And I’ve done some really hard things by far quitting smoking is top of the list. It’ll get better though you’re getting close to the good part where you’re gonna see improvement in your hair and skin and whatever weight you’ve gained as a result of the quitting will shed itself and your body will start understanding you want to love it and take care of it again and it will be happy. You will be harmonious in mind body and spirit. Who knows maybe you’ll start yoga and meditation. When you take something away and you feel an empty hole inside sorta ya gotta fill it with goodness. You are doing FANTASTIC! Exercise and eating better will fall into place much easier as long as you’ve rid yourself of the poisonous cigarettes. My advice is drink more water and then drink more flush all of it out. I am really so happy for you- you should go treat yourself with the money you didn’t spend on smokes to something good that you previously deprived yourself of. I hope you are feeling good, you deserve to feel good. You deserve a smoke free life and I’m so glad you’ve given it to yourself. Keep up the good work👍👍
