Black Coffee

Hi there, I suffer with Severe Bronchiectasis and end stage COPD, I like my black coffee as it seems to open up my airways although I have read a few articles stating it makes mucus harder to get up if you have too many of them? Can I have your thoughts please as I also drink a lot of water ever day.

Thanks

Joe

Hi

Quote

Drinking black coffee to relieve chest congestion works on two fronts: first, breathing in the steam from the coffee can aid in breaking up mucus in the lungs and esophagus. Also, coffee — and caffeine — can act as an expectorant, just like is found in over-the-counter medicines. This will aid in shortness of breath and acts as an anti-inflammatory.

Thank goodness I’m officially ok on black coffee! I’ve had to give up my favourite black Earl Grey tea....very heavy in salicylates, my asthma bugbear. I’d be wary of black coffee after about 2pm though - I also suffer from prednisolone sleepless nights! 😴. Thanks, Stone

Yes it does. My first Asthma nurse told me so, I remember her saying you see a lot of asthmatics drinking black coffee.

Well you don’t want to abuse of a good thing. I bought a small nespresso type machine now and I have 2 cups a day, one when I slump at midmorning and one after lunch. As I take my inhalers first thing in the morning and at night it helps. But we know coffee dehydrates, I personally drink 2 litres of water and herbal teas altogether a day. My doctor agreed, it helps with my kidney function while on steroids. Because of the meds I get very dry, I drink water at night, probably sleeping with my mouth open doesn’t help! 😉

I think it is the milk in the coffee that is known to make it harder to clear mucus rather than the coffee itself. Drinking it black shouldn't cause a problem. :)

" Hello Joseph..i was interested in your question regarding coffee and it's inflamamatry effects on our lungs. My lung specialist has just started Me on life long Theromycillin top up treatment.i have to take 1 tablet a day. Blood tested every 7 days to make sure im not being over dosed. I was told NOT! To drink anything with caffeine in it. Chocolate. Coffee..tea..hot chocolate drinks..reasons given is that this drug is like caffeine.. So to drink it would give me a untrue reading while on this medication. Making it dangerous for me.. So in answer to your very good question. Yes!! Coffee does open up and relaxes your lungs. So enjoy your black coffee. I hope my little tale will have been of some help to you.. ..Megan.."
