Pulse rate keeps going over 110 bpm resting. Oxygen at 96 so not that, maybe Spiriva. Starting to get panicky with this and can’t sleep. Does this happen to anyone else?

There are a number of reasons for a high pulse, it could be stress/anxiety, medications or circadian rhythms where the bodys naturally as periods of raised pulse. There are many reasons best advice would be to see your GP. Many reasons can be eliminated by a few simple tests.

Hi Shazam, I have taken spiriva abou 3 years ago. Didn’t have any problems.

My copd came back eith a vengeance. So now I’m taking Incruse. which is very similar. It’s like a powder that is inhaled. Taken once a day. Seems to be working. No problems with it as yet.

Regards

Patricia

Thank you for response, hoping it is not Spiriva as doctor seems to think it’s the best to take.

I don’t think spiriva is any different to incruse. So please don’t worry about it. You haven’t said if it’s working for you. How long have you been taking it for

Shazza59 profile image
Shazza59 in reply tojoemaypat70

Have been taking for 4 weeks when diagnosed with COPD so have no other inhaler. Not sure if working, don’t feel any different but am trying to get fitness levels up little by little, still get a bit short on breath on stairs.

Haven’t they given you an inhaler for your breathless. I have a blue inhaler called Salbutamol which helps me when I get breathless. I would go back to Drs and ask for one. I did. Dare I ask how old you are? I am 75

Shazza59 profile image

My doctor when I asked for rescue inhaler said I wasn’t wheezing so don’t need one. I would like one especially when get panicky. Will ask again when I make apt for next week. No real info and no real help from doc!!!

From what you told me if you’re out of breath he should give you one. I use mine when I’m out of breath. Can I ask you where abouts you live?. I live near York England.

Persevere with Dr. I’ve found my salbutamol works well for being breathless.

Good luck. Let me know how you got on. Take care.

I will ask again as I too think I should have one. I live in Dublin, Ireland but would have thought treatments more or less the same as here. Will let you know when get something sorted thanks.

Hope all goes well for you. I would have thought the treatment would be the same as well. The best of luck to you. Try and be positive. Keep at your Dr won’t you.?. Don’t let the Doc fob you off.

Let me know.

I’m really sorry for what you are going through. Years ago I had spiriva and had the same than you. I look everywhere in forums to compare my experience with someone that was under spiriva as well.

I came across some people that had supraventrycular tachycardia.

Personally I stopped the medication at once and took 4 months to recover from the side effects of spiriva. Other side effects were body shaking, panic attacks, pressure on the chest.

I replace spiriva with fluticasone propionate and is going very good, no side effects at all.

If you want to talk more about it I’m open.

Best regards

Akiko

Thank you. Can’t get to my gp till next week so not sure whether to keep taking Spiriva, have been on it 4 weeks and only experiencing this badly in last couple of days. Even went pulse drops to 88 still feel heart beating in chest. Been a couple of years since got heart checked and all good so hoping something isn’t wrong now.

When I have these side effects they lasted 4 months even after stopping with the spiriva. Electrocardiograma was good but they told was not the right medicine for me. The doctor told me that wasn’t coming from the heart but from the longs. I wish you all the best.

I take Spiriva and had no problems. my friend used it from her dr and she too had palpitations, she could not tolerate it. It's all trial and error, if you think it's the Spiriva stop for a few days and see don't keep using it.

Might try stopping for a few days and see if there is a difference, only came on last couple of days and taking Spiriva for 4 weeks now. As you say seems to be trial and error.

I know from experience that medicines affect people differently. I never had any trouble at all with Spiriva. I'm not a doctor but I would doubt that is the problem. Could you be having a panic attack. I know that I get those. I am wearing my oxygen and levels will be ok but I can't breath and when I check my oxygen level with the oxometer it shows my heart rate way up there. I think when one starts having trouble breathing, if you are like me, you panic and that makes things worse. Does this happen right after you take your Spiriva, or at night while you are in bed? If it happens right after you take the Spiriva, then it might be that, but otherwise I'd say it's something else.

Shazza59 profile image
Shazza59 in reply toNikilet

Usually happens more evening time not immediately after taking Spiriva. Feel fluttering in chest and pulse is high on oximeter. Turned into a panic attack last night and managed to breathe myself out of it eventually, nearly was tempted to phone hospital. Hadn’t been short of breath before this, palpitations made me panicky and of course rate went even higher, worried this will happen again. Thanks for response and will see how I go over weekend. All doctors off now here till Tues so would be A&E if it happens now.

Nikilet in reply toShazza59

Yes, what you describe sounds just like me. I used to get this all the time. Now it doesn't happen often. I tell myself to STOP the panic and breathe, and I ask the Lord to help me remain calm.

Shazza59 profile image
Shazza59 in reply toNikilet

Thanks Nikilet, glad it doesn’t happen as often now for you as the worse feeling ever. Will tell myself to STOP next time and try to relax through it. I heard anxiety came hand in hand with COPD and I have suffered a couple to attacks since diagnosis. Hoping it will wear off a bit as coming more to terms with disease. Fitness levels not great so will be trying to exercise a bit too and hope it helps. Take care.

Hi Shazza59 oxygen levell above 95 is not bad I am now on Braltus our community health told all the G.P to stop giving spriva and change to Braltus because it is less expensive.I think you are stressing yourself out try not to worry or go and see your GP COPD is quite difficult to manage do you hold antibiotics as a rescue medication if you get a infection and if I suffer a chest infection I start taking them but only for a infection hope this is of help to you.

Shazza59 profile image
Shazza59 in reply toDarkymcgee45

Have not been given rescue pack or rescue inhaler. Don’t think have infection though my daughter and husband have had a cold for the last week. Have fluttering in chest and pulse keeps going over 100, sometimes 102 but has hit 115 but not much. Feel palpitations even when drops to 88. Blood pressure slightly low too. Will have to wait till next week to see gp so may just have to breath through the panics for now. Thank you so much for your advice.

Been on spiriva for years and had lots of trouble with kidney infections but have cleared up no, tried others but went back to spiriva, they all have the same ingredients so try and find one that suits you,

Shazza59 profile image
Shazza59 in reply tobobbyfloyd

Have felt slight kidney problem but nothing major to date. Might try to switch soon and see how I go on another inhaler thanks.

I'm not on spiriva but everything you are suffering is EXACTLY what I suffer when I have a chest infection. Please make sure your doctor checks for it BUT if he says there's no infection and you continue to feel like this then take yourself to A&E. I hope you get sorted as it's a dreadful feeling

Shazza59 in reply toalvorite

Thank you alvorite, will try to get appointment with doc this week. Pulse has gone down slightly but have bloating and pain in ribs. Sometimes awake in the night feeling like heart racing. Have no cough or cold.

alvorite profile image
alvorite in reply toShazza59

I didn't have a cold and only developed the cough on the day I took myself to A&E. Please don't "try" get an appointment, you MUST...tell receptionist you have COPD or what ever you have, believe me they will soon find an appointment for you. I don't want it being pneumonia or plurisy...i may sound OTT but a man on this site took himself to A&E and the doc said "why have you let it get so bad, we can't always get ppl like you back" now that's a scary thought !!!!

Hi Shazza59,

Can I please ask what you tried after Spiriva please?? And what's been successful? have you these issues as I was suffering the same, I've come off it and had a few panic attacks too!!

Anybody else please feel free to give suggestions too, I just can't have heart rate like that as can't function!

I'm happy to be on my blue inhaler but then out of breath on doing anything else but walking really which is a nightmare! I'm only 40??

Steroids have not reacted that well so far either!

Thanks
