Can vacuum cleaning be classed as part of exercise routine. I find it takes a lot of energy! Lilian xxxxx

Vacuum cleaning, polishing, cleaning windows are all exercise in my opinion. :)

Thinking of housework as exercise and not a chore should make me a bit more keen!! Lilian xxxxx

I was never into disco dancing, didn't like the music. I used to love Rock and Roll, still like the music. Lilian xxxx

That's more the heavy stuff Andy, I should think men are more interested in that, my era was Eddie Cochrane, Buddy Holly, Brenda Lee, Ray Charles etc. etc.... Lilian xxxxx

It's definitely exercise, and hard at that, but you should take care to minimise your exposure to the dust which the vacuum cleaner raises both from its filter and just by pushing it over carpets etc.

And with other cleaning, e.g. as MrsM mentions, take care not to use spray cleaners - big publicity about how they are the equivalent of smoking 20 cigs a day. All over the press at the weekend.

Yes, I read about that O2. Toilet cleaner and bleach knocks me back a bit. Lilian xxxxx

There are lots of recipes for making your own cleaner online Lilian. Bicarb and vinegar are good and totally non-toxic for the lungs.

But crikey, 20 cigarettes? Who knew?? x :)

Lilian226 profile image
Lilian226 in reply to O2Trees

I will have a look at that 02 thank you. I expect we can buy a fair amount of vinegar and bicarb for the cost of a packet of cigarettes!! Lilian xxxxx

I have learned so much from this forum, knew next to nothing about my condition, emphesema ,( I can never spell it) before I joined. Now if there's something I'm not sure about, I know someone who does. Thank you. Lilian xxxxx

Yes definitely....When first diagnosed I practiced pulse lip breathing whilst doing the job.

Lilian226 profile image
Lilian226 in reply to Badbessie

I do that too BB. I find the hardest work is mopping the kitchen floor, I get really breathless so don't do it as much as I ought to. Lilian xxxxx

Well Lilian, vacuum cleaning is one of the exercises at the top of the list for burning calories, but not sure the dust from emptying it is good for our lung condition :) fors and againsts to all things we do.I prefer the disco idea or music in general, we can listen or just sing along. Sunshine here so have a good day, cooler weather forecast for end of week. x

Hi Kate, the dust from the vacuum cleaner doesn't seem to affect my breathing, just the pushing and pulling. I would really like not to do it but I do get some good exercise and if I didn't do it who would? I'm sometimes tempted to get a cleaner and maybe do disco dancing instead. I love all kinds of music but not disco. I admire you Kate and how you cope alone, you just get on with it. Has all your building work finished now? The weather is much milder now, hasn't it been a long, cold, hard, winter? I hope you are well. Lilian xxxxxx

Hello again Lilian, have to agree if we don't do it ourselves who will. Like you I often feel like hiring a cleaner. Most of last years work is complete just some garden work to finish and a few odd jobs. It is another year and two months have gone already, would like to get a few more things sorted but my arthritis is telling me to slow down, the colder weather does not help. Its been lovely and mild today but weather forecast is for more cold weather. Got just one garden fence panel left to paint need dry weather for that and not frosty. Bulbs are popping up now & cyclamen. I'm on antibiotics for a skin infection just a precaution, it was a scald but looks very inflamed and it is taking a long time to heal. Talking about vacuums I just got a lovely compact light weight one as my old one literally blew up on me. Got an appointment for Physio in April see if I can strenghten some muscles , the use in my right arm and hand is getting very poor. But still keep going, lifes to short to sit and dream. Keep well and warm and do take care xx

Hello Kate, you are keeping busy in spite of health drawbacks. I hope your arthritis is not bothering you too much, must be very painful. I don't think I could paint a fence!! Yes the garden is beginning to wake up now, lovely! We had our lawn scarified yesterday, so should look good during spring and summer. I won't mention the downside of weeding and lawn mowing. How did you scold your arm? That must have been painful. We also have recently bought a light weight vacuum a GTECH, so much easier, almost a pleasure using it. They are a bit cheaper than the Dyson but very good. Hope your physio goes well. Lovely day today, have just been for a short walk with the dogs. Wouldn't it be good not have to stop every so often to get our breath back, but it's all good exercise! Talk soon Kate. Love Lilian xxxxxxx

Hi Lilian, your kept busy too with the dogs, have to feed them, walk them, bath them. But they are great company . It was not my arm I scalded, it was my breast. The teapot spout was facing me when I picked up the tray in the local church cafe and the water splashed out, too spite having several layers of clothing on it gave me a bad scald about 2inches long. Did not realise it was that bad till I got home, it just looked red but was well blistered by the time I got home. It was not too painfull either must have an high pain threshold, I'm sure anyone else would have dropped the tray. Absestos skin as we used to say in the kitchen or no sense no feeling :) :) Yes it would be lovely if we could do a job without stopping. I sometimes do the fence in ten minute spates that's why it takes so long fortunately does not need doing every year. Will catch up with you another day. Love Katexx

Yes very good exercise but highly dangerous if you have a lung condition unless you protect yourself against the dust the vacuum releases when in use/ You can buy masks for ultra fine dust particles.

Lilian226 profile image
Lilian226

I've tried a mask but it really restricted my breathing. Where does all the dust come from? I vacuum 3 or 4 times per week and the container is full of dust every time. I turn my face away when emptying it. Lilian xxxx

I subscribe [edited] quite often they have home made cleaners for just about everything. Never tried them as I have a cleaner come in twice a week as per of my rent (at £2300 A month for one bed flat it is a requirement:( luckily the company pays)

Lilian226 profile image
Lilian226

Crikey, Andy that is a lot for rent!! Where do you live? You must be a valued part of your company. I've heard about Pinterest but can't really be bothered with anything else other than Facebook (keep an eye on what my family are getting up to) and HU. Can't get over the cost of your rent. This is in Bahrain for an apartment (23 rd floor flat) in a mid sized apartment block. If is in a convenient place for travel to Saudi Arabia for work. This is standard for my grade in the company but believe me we suffer in other ways:)

Also this is middle of the range for the region:)

Suffer in Bahrain Andy!! We spent a number of years there, my husband worked for Gulf Air, It was lovely, the Bahrainis were very hospitable, the Saudis not so. I don't think I could stand the heat now. Does it affect your breathing. Lilian xxxxxx
