I have searched through all my (not inconsiderable) sources for this. Sorry, I can find no mention of vitamin A (retinoic acid) as a cure, I have Emphysema, the closest I can find is 8 years old and is here:

Google "Vitamin cure for emphysema"

Ahhh, Dr Google, sorry but there is no cure at the present time. If it was a simple case of treating it with vitamin A (that can be dangerous, if too much is taken) then I think that half of the members here would have left, having been cured.

Sorry to disappoint you, Google is not a good source of accurate info, otherwise I would be dead in a years time according to some of the search results that get brought up and I am a long, long way off from that. I have severe Emphysema and very much alive, leading a normal life including working full time. You might get comfort from that little fact, a diagnosis of Emphysema is not a death sentence, it is difficult to live with at first but you can get accustomed to it and it is hard work but you get accustomed to that as well, if you give yourself the chance to. I do wish there was a cure though.

This is what I was advised to take I started it yesterday. Lots of distilled water, NAC 600mg, B1-100mg 5 times a day, vit. C 1000mg. Iodine. No Tylenol. Ear right not a bunch of junk, good veggies, fruit, lemons, mostly turkey and fishes. Next I'm trying to find out about cannabis oil, with a 67% THC and CBD of 5%> now trying to find that. Lol I hope I can. Good luck.. oh, a postive mind. One more thing. I got a little weak in my tummy and I never get sick at that so it must had been all the stuff. So today I'm gonna try taking each product at 2 hours apart.

Wow you're taking high quantities of those water soluble vits. Your body can only use so much and you'll just pee the rest out. Just out of interest, if you don't mind, who advised those quantities. You eat a good diet so are probably getting pretty much what you need, I'd re-evalutate if I were you and save yourself some money.

The vit B12 is taken five times a day so if I pee it out I'm replacing it. Actually the only one I questioned was the highlight C. But the others are in range I believe. Oh I need them really bad my body its immune system feels like it's shutting down lol.. may not be, but feels like it. The nac is for the repair of the quanthion a molecule which has a sticky substance on it grabs the free radicals and helps destroy them too. When it's damaged it can't throw off the toxins from your system. So that helps. A Dr. In Canada gave me the regimen I'm on to help with my copd. I don't mind imput so don't hold back cause I'm just on the first step of this and if I need to think about something tell me, I don't mind.

Oh okay Hoopy. What you haven't mentioned is vitamin D3 make sure your levels are optimal. I have read a research paper that said optimal levels of D3 in people with COPD reduces exacerbations significantly. That was some time ago and since I have been supplementing I haven't had one infection/exacerbation. If you do supplement D3 you must take vitamin K2-7 also to make sure the calcium, which the D helps to absorb, will get absorbed in the right places ie. bones and teeth, not arteries. I also make kefir and ferments to make sure I have a good gut flora, all helps in boosting the immune system.

So you think with what I'm taking I can add what you say here. I want to be safe.

I was gonna ask how much D3? You know my Dr had me on 50,000 units of D six months ago, but when I picked up my meds they weren't in my package. Then I started having problems with this Dr and I've recently changed. He wouldn't even call my nebulizer solution in. He made me so mad. So maybe this new Dr will be better for me. So tell be about the D3?

No reason, I don't believe, why you shouldn't take D3 with what you are taking. Your doctor giving you a dose of 50,000 units of D3 would suggest you have shown up deficient, that is a very high dose so a loading dose I would assume. I was given large doses initially for a short time because I was deficient, and then I went on a maintenance dose of 10,000. I now take 1,000 units daily to maintain my optimum levels. Of course this is something you need to talk to your doctor about and get regular testing. Unlike the water soluble vitamins, where your body will just get rid of the surplus, vitamin D3 is a fat soluble vitamin and your body cannot get rid of it and too much will cause toxicity. A good website is The Vitamin D Council, plenty of good info there. I'll try and find a link to what I made reference to re. copd and D3.

Need advice or help. Had a guy to call me said he can get the oil I need for 350.00. one ounce. Does that sound right to any of you all. Also how do I get some, I don't want to be scammed so how do I know where to go to trust someone? Thanks.

I think you may have these percentages around the wrong way as "cannabis oil, with a 67% THC and CBD of 5%" would make you high as a kite!! Be fun though ;-)

I ain't been high since 1997.. it would floor me but the recommended dose was no bigger than a pin head twice a day. So maybe that makes a difference. Plz reply back.

Even if it works on mice doesn't mean it will work on humans and I should think there are many years of research left before it might become available to us so I shouldn't hold your breath! x

It is always important to look at the source of any material to weed out the misleading claims. Hopefully progress will be made with treatments for COPD in the near future.

I have done considerable research today. The orlginal study was published by Massaro in Nature in 1996 and indeed rats with elastin induced emphysema were cured with a vitamin A derivative ATRA. Results replicated using both all-trans-retinoic acid and 9-cis-retinoic acid. In humans its a different story. After a crossover study using 20 patients with severe emphysema on 50 mg/m/d no physiological changes wee found. The study concluded that further studies were feasible.(American Journal of Respiratory and Critcal Care Medicine vol. 165 #5 March 2002 Mao.. I was able to read this study but only the abstract from Massero's. In short nothing yet. I could not find a more recent study. Much care was taken to guard against dangers in the 2002 study and no positive results were found. Do not treat yourself please. Carol
