Hello there..just been to docs fir copd check up. Worried because the dwp have asked me in fir another medical. Get very breathless with my copd..sometimes difficult just getting ready. I asked for a readout from my nurse today but havn't got a clue what to look for or what to emphasise at my medical..lung age 77...thats all i can really read from my readout. The dwp just assume your lying when you tell them hiw badly your struggling with your condition so what figures should i be looking at? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi, if you have a DWP medical/interview go on line and research what you need to say to reach the amount of points that the results of your ‘fitness’ are based on.

I attended a medical with my father in law who has a dibilitating condition where he has fits similar to epilepsy and has done for 25 years. It is not actually diagnosed as any one condition so he is a bit of an enigma to the medical community in general. However, being a proud and honest man he played down his symptoms and exaggerated his ability to cope day to day, and generally engaged well with the man conducting the medical.

Consequently based on his interview answers he was ‘fine’ and had to go to tribunal etc etc (which he won because he is too ill to work) .

It was through all this that i looked this all up to find out what had happened and there are plenty of sites which explain the whole process and how to ensure you get a fair and accurate assessment.

I think when I looked for instance, if you obtained a ‘15’ score in any category then you are not fit for work; for example if you get random urges to attack people then that’s a 15. That one probably doesn’t help you though. Unless you attack people randomly of course.

Check it out on line and take someone supportive with you would be my advice.

Regards

Thanks...the whole process is designed to make you fail..they contradicted themselves all the way through at my last medical and hed to get advice from c.a.b. 10 months later managed to win my tribunal which uz a grind in itself...sitting in a magistrates court having to prove how ill you are!!! i'm surprised nobody's kicked off yet at these medical places yet but it will happen. I dont condone violence at all but i completely understand how enraged people are feeling. Thankkd again for your reply.

Get a letter of evidence from your specialist and GP. stressing the seriousness of your condition; you must also emphasise, for example, you cant walk far, they will oof course ask, how far can you walk? how breathless you get, dont know if you are on oxygen or not? You cannot underplay your condition; in fact, you must overplay it, as if you say you can manage certain things, they will fail you; Its like, they seem to think that if someone can do one small thing, that they are capable of working full time! The system is set totally against people. Evidence is key. Good luck x

I hope you get a good outcome; what an idiot your health care professional sounds like! You must stress you do not have family to help you then; try and get evidence from GP re depression also. All the best x

It is a wrong attempt to save the benefits bill by trying to reduce the number of people on ESA etc.

The problem is that the people who play the system know how to get round this nonsense and the only people who have their benefits removed are the people who are vulnerable, ill or elderly who are honest and have no one fighting in their corner for them.

Just been turned down for aa. Do you have to be dying to get it. I see people who get and look after themselves without any problem. Unfortunately I don't know the system as I have never applied for any benefits before. I will just have to pay cleaner and gardener out my own pocket which I find a struggle. Sorry for my whinging.

I am sure the anecdotal horror stories do more to unsettle applicants, and decrease their chances of success than the few rogue assessors.

I did not want recording either....just get things off to a bad start in my eyes.

Each to their own opinion though, all I know is I went through it and ignored the horror stories.
