COPD & Smoking

I have sent for the magnetic ear pieces to try to help me kick this dreadful habit, having been diagnosed with COPD 5 years ago, & getting so short of breath I know I have to before it gets me. Does anyone still smoke? & has anyone tried these ear magnets or is there another tried& tested method than can help. Please don't judge me for my foolishness, I'm now desperate. Please help.

Hi I have never heard of ear magnets but I hope they work for you.

I was diagnosed with mild copd 9 years ago and am still mild despite still smoking until August this year. I finally managed to pack it in with the help of patches and an inhalator.

There is a great quit smoking site on here if you wish to join it. Just type in Quit and it will come up. The wonderful folk on there really helped me stop and are still brilliant in helping me stay stopped. Good luck. x

I’m truly so sorry you’re struggling so. I’d be the LAST person in the world to judge you! Cuz oh boy was I judged: 4 open ❤️Surgeries ,a MAJOR stroke an I was still puffin til 2012 I was finally able to cut it loose! Going on 6yrs I still want one every now and then but I just pass an urge will pass. I used patches til nightmares got on my last nerve then I ate every candy known to mankind til my body worked itself out back to human after the Frankenstein smoke cleared, can’t tell you magnets do or don’t work what I can tell you is if there’s anything in this world you care about that’s what you’ve gotta focus on! Stuff is hard-do it anyway. You really can do it. I perceive you can, I believe you can, you will quit smoking. If the struggle is overpowering seek counsel, go to a support group meeting, get doctor drugs do whatever it takes. The whole COPD thing is rough, it actually sucks, I still can’t pass a lung function test and presently have a bad cold/flu thing going on and the COPD makes sinus stuff really enhanced. Quit smoking put all your $ for smokes in a stash spot wait til you see all the $$ in a year! It’ll blow you away, plus none of us cool kids smoke anymore. Pistachio nuts were my friend I’s spend so much time shelling an eating them I forgot about the ciggy that I had thought I needed. Feel free to vent your frustrations, I will listen and reply👍You will achieve non smoker status

I advise you to use Varenicline Champix®. That's how I quit smoking. After talking to the doctor as it has many side effects, but using as it should be, the results are almost guaranteed. He begins to take and continues to smoke and will soon stop enjoying and erase his cigarette sooner until he has to stop. Then it is a question of will, but with the condition that we have always is an incentive

I've heard this is really good but because of other medications I am on I'm not allowed use it. Good luck with it

Hi Jansy16, no one will judge you on here, on this Forum we are all trying to help each other so don't worry about that Jansy. We all have fears and worries, but a problem shared as they say. I have never heard of the ear magnets. Let us know how you get on with it? ✋️😊

There are many adverts promising cures for illnesses and problems connected with them but unfortunately most of them merely transfer money from your pocket to the advertisers . This is a cruel deception on people who like yourself who are desperate for help.

I suggest that you seek help from your G,P.s surgery who should be able to point you in right direction. Some surgeries have nurses who specialise in your problem.

Whatever you do don’t give up. Good luck.

I smoked for 50 years, and the ecig is what works best for me. Everyone is different, but I couldn't go cold turkey, and after trying several things (unsuccessfully), the ecig is what made the transition much easier. Good luck with your efforts... I hope that you find something that works for you . XXX

Welcome, Jansy16 . I used the patches. We all find different things helpful but, in my opinion, what matters most is making the decision to stop. I have never heard of the magnets (and they sound a bit off the wall as a stop smoking aid) but there are lots of proven alternatives; patches, Champix, etc. Nobody here will judge you and many of us have made a similar journey.

Hi jansy16. Don't beat yourself about smoking, the addiction to nicotine is a hard one to break.

I stopped once, in 2003 using the highest strength patches.

This last time I stopped, the patches gave me an unbearable, itchy rash where they had been, so I too used an ecig. It eased the awful withdrawal symptoms away. I cur down to 3 cigs a day then two ect...

Good luck xx

Hi Jansy, I still smoke and I know it is stupid, as my condition is getting progressively worse. The thing I'm about to try is an e-cigarette, but with a cigarette paper around the filter, as it makes it feel more like a cigarette when you smoke. I found that the cold filter put me off, though I didn't realise that's what was putting me of. I'll let you know if it works.

I think my problem with smoking is psychological as it has helped me remain sane through some very difficult times. I've never heard of magnetic ear pieces. I tried Champix, which I think would work, but it clashed with another new medicine I was given. It makes the cigarettes taste disgusting.

I tried hypnotism, but only went once. It certainly made me dislike the smell of smoking, but I should have gone back for another session.

I'm really sympathetic to you and if I find a way to give up, I'll let you know. I think I want to avoid the stress element of giving up. They have just produced a study which says doing a lot of physical exercise helps withdrawal symptoms.

Keep in touch and let us all know how you get on.

Take care

Cigarettes are the biggest scammers in the business. They work their way into your subconscious and convince you they are your biggest supporter and best friend whist insidiously destroying your lungs and taking all your cash. They are NOT helping you in any way, shape or form. They are conning you. Throw them out on their ear. :)

Hi Jansy16, I tried everything, patches, hypnotherapy, aquapuncture, sprays, you name it I tried it, to no avail. Then my daughter sent me the book ' Alan Carrs easy way to stop smoking' (I think you can get it second hand on Amazon for about .20p) I laughed when I looked at it thinking, how many times have I tried, anyway it was a really wet weekend and I sat down to it reading it right the way through thinking how boring is this, but finished it in one day. That was 9 years ago and I have never looked back. The good this is I felt marvellous and the little cravings were nothing. Try it, you have nothing to lose. Good luck x

Hello Jansy16. Stopping smoking was the hardest thing I have ever done, after puffing away for 53 years I got to the stage that I knew I had to stop, I tried all sorts of things with no success, I felt at a loss as to what to do, and I came to the conclusion that I had to cut it down slowly not just stop, so after a period of trial and error I decided on nicotine replacement lozenges, they taste nasty at first, but you soon get used to it, so off I went, I cut it down gradually, it took me nearly 4 months to stop, but I did it with no withdrawal symptoms or mood swings at all, in fact it was easier than I thought it would be, it wasn't a walk in the park either, but I did it, that was 11 years ago. That is how I did it, it was the only way I could do it and it has worked for several other people I have told about it. I hope this is of some help to you. Please let me know if you try it and how you get on. Take care and breath easy xxx

Hi Jansy

I stopped smoking cigs over a year ago, I too had tried everything under the sun but not ear magnets, they sound like they work on the principal of acupuncture.

Eventually after 48 years of smoking and trying to stop I have given in to an e-cig, so I suppose I am still smoking but with out all the chemicals. After 6 months, using the e-cig I had my final admission to hospital with an dreadful exacerbation, but since then nothing, and I can breath again!!! In fact I feel I have the best of both worlds, health and financial gain, as e-cig costs around £20 in juice, a month.

I most definitely recommend this alternative to cigarettes.

I agree that e-cigs are a brilliant alternative to smoking - I have been a vaper for 8 years. What I cannot accept is that you regard yourself as still a smoker Jane - there is no smoke involved at all. You are an ex-smoker using nicotine in a different form, and nicotine in the strengths that we vape is actually beneficial for all kinds of conditions.

Jansy16 I am the last person to judge - I smoked with mild COPD and I went worse to the point i was told to stop, or else.

I stopped 17 years ago and my wife did at the same time - It was not that bad for me, my wife suffered a lot more, and she has no chest problems..

Honestly the easiest way to stop smoking is to pick a D Day and stop on that day, if you can forget aids and cutting down - That can work but IMO is worse torment.

I cut myself to 8 a day - I constantly looked at the time for my next cigarette, it was a nightmare. I just stopped after that and never looked back.

If you want a honest opinion. ;magnetic ear piece' to stop smoking may be worth a go, but IMO it is probably like the red and green diets to lose weight, the only weight you lose is in your purse and wallet IMO.

My best advice is to see your Asthma Nurse - She/He will probably work out a plan with you, maybe for you coming of gradual will work being so desperate, but you need a plan and your Nurse will help you, mine did..

i am not judging - I am saying is as it was how I found it, pretty hard - After three weeks of not smoking most feel the benefits, after two moths, many wonder why they ever smoked.

Me and my wide paid for foreign holidays with the money we saved. maybe not for you but have an incentive to stop smoking, you are half way there..

The very best of. It is not easy but with COPD you really need proper help... You can do it Jansy16 ..

As a last resort try e cigs. I have never had them but they are tar free, so won't inflame your airways as much.. Keep trying,,,

It's hard to give up the dreadful cigs habit but it has to be done. Fright gave me the incentive to give up immediately I was diagnosed and my GP telling me he wouldn't treat me if I continued. I don't know of this latest fad for quitting only the patches & gum so cannot give any info, sorry. Mind over matter that is the key, hard though it may be. Many of us idiots on this forum smoked so you are not alone, we all wish we hadn't "it won't happen to me type attitude" When it does it's hard but you can & must do it.

I have tried just about everything, and nothing worked. That is until I tried Nicorette Quickmist. I no longer smoke, over 5 years now, but I am still addicted to nicotine. My respirologist told me that even though I still use the quickmist, it is much better than smoking. I thought about using e-cigs but was told they were bad for you too.

I swear by this Nicorette quickmist. I get an urge for a cig and one spray and within 30 seconds my urge is gone. I live in Canada and quickmist is sold everywhere but when I go south to the USA for the winter, it is not sold there. So I order it online from the UK.

Maybe this will help you stop smoking, I know it did it for me.

You have to find ur thing the thing that works for u. My thing was foreign dramas I was so engrossed in reading the subtitles I didn't smoke. Then I found Korean dramas and fell in love with their purity. I watched hard working people striving for their families. Then I put a treadmill in front of the TV. Now I'm happier, stronger and am a better person. I learned important life lessons you can too. Fight to be healthy. Eat well, think good thoughts.. Love yourself and fight to live well.

KEEP UR HEART STRONG
