Gosh, does your body ever get immune to them?

I haven't had water infections from taking antibiotics and I have taken shed loads. I have had lots of thrush though and in some people that can lead to water infections. How horrid for you. Get real cranberry juice and drink lots.

I do take antibiotics for broch exacerbations I wonder if there is a lnk?

Oh there definitely is a link. It has been the bane of my life. Some abs are worse than others. I get it in my mouth from nebulised abs and inhalers I have had 'specialists' tell me it was everything but denied thrush because it doesn't look like it.Saw a dermatologist this week who said absolutely it is thrush and to use nystan mouth drops permanently. Nasty little candida!

Thanks littlepom! I don't want to resort to foul language on our excellent web site but it is tempting.

Hi Dawnsunny,

Littlepom's experience is more likely. While the antibiotics are busy killing off bacteria the fungi and yeasts creep in instead. People experience thrush in the mouth and other places. If you've ever had a fungal skin or nail infection these can come back too.

If you've finished the ABs then there is an argument for the little drinks that help get the gut bacteria going. Getting the insides back in balance helps keep other stuff in check.

As always if something carries on for too long, it's back to the doctor to be checked up 😄😄

Hope all returns to normal soon

Would Acidophilus help in these circumstances? I have a friend who suffers lots of UTIs and can't take the conventional nitrofurantoin because she's allergic to it but has been recommended Acidophilus because it builds up the gut flora which antibiotics can destroy. Must admit that, because I'm on Azithropmycin 3x weekly now, I take it every day at breakfast.

Any feedback from those more knowledgeable than me?

I have acidophilus for when I have been taking antibiotics and they work for me . Hope you find something that suits you.

Hi Dawnsunny,

I take OptiBac probiotics to replace the gut flora. When I'm on antibiotics I take the "For those on antibiotics" version (which definitely survive the antibiotics), and I've now started taking their "Extra strength daily" ones the rest of the time. I think this is the same stuff as in the little drinks, but different details (?) and without whatever else goes in the drink.

Wishing you all the best

Rachel :-)

Hi, do you still take them when not on antibiotics?

Yes, I'm taking the "extra strength daily" ones. When I got diagnosed (3 weeks ago) I took a course of the "on antibiotics" ones because I had them in the house, then went onto the daily ones when they were finished.

I've heard research about how the diversity of bacteria in our gut functions as another organ in the body, and these days there is much less diversity. (Antibiotics in farming etc) And I figure my immune system needs all the help it can get to fight off infections.

Seems to be working so far. I'm waiting for my post-diagnosis physio appointment so I know I'm not doing breathing exercises correctly yet. A couple of times recently I've felt sneezy and under-the-weather; I've taken aconite (homeopathic remedy which works to ward off colds) and it's got better - and no chest infection.

I think the combination of probiotics and homeopathy with breathing exercises when I've learnt them (and a generally healthy food/exercise/lifestyle which I'm trying to maintain) will be my preferred method of keeping healthy if I can.

Don't know what will and won't work, and I'm aware that I'm heading towards my first winter since the bronchiectasis became obviously symptomatic...

Sorry I seem to have gone on a bit. Feel free to ignore!

All the best to you.

Rachel :-)

Aww not at all!

I'm trying to get my head round things too. I'm also worried as Winter loomes! And as much as I have read and watched videos on what to do I find the whole breathing exercises and huffing really difficult to do properly and the right way round lol, it's like rubbing your tummy and patting your head, I'm all over the place.

X

Hiya I do suffer from water infections after antibiotics and the only thing I've found that helps me is to drink plenty barley water, it's what my grandma always gave me when I was young, only then she made her own (not so nice) as what you buy over the counter now. Hope this helps you. Take care. X

Sorry if this sounds silly, but do you mean similar to the Robinsons barley water cordial? x
