Need Help Please

Hi there,

A couple of weeks ago I slipped in the shower and hit the right side of my ribs on the side of the bath. Recently the pain has increased in severity, it is painful to touch and seems to be swollen. I have also found that taking deep breaths, coughing, laughing and sneezing increases the pain.

I was wondering what this could be, how to pain the stop and if this could have been caused by my fall.

Hi there. No one here can diagnose you. From what you describe what you need is a doctor and an x-ray.

Oh ok... but from I have described would you be able to tell me what's wrong

No, sorry. The members here are not medically qualified and even if they were diagnosing online without knowing the patient's history or being able to examine them would be extremely foolhardy if not downright dangerous. Please see a suitably qualified medic.

Definitely get yourself to hospital. You could have broke some ribs or something but, only an hospital Xray can tell you. You shouldn't have braved it out.

Let us know how you get on xx

Cracked ribs cause pain .. but that doesn't usually get worse a couple of weeks later! Broken ribs have similar symptoms ... but again the pain subsides with time.

Broken ribs that have caused internal organs to be damaged might cause pain that gets worse, swelling and sensitivity ... but not always.

But then, the pain could be nothing to do with your fall - I could carry on guessing but what good would it do?

Based on your symptoms I suspect that even Dr Google would struggle ... what's stopping you going to your GP?

Seriously, you HAVE TO get a medical opinion - from someone who can see you, please do it as soon as possible (or consider A&E if the pain is unbearable)

Best wishes

Hi ABjn23, rib injuries can be quite painful but as there is swelling and increased pain you do really need to go to A&E as GPs don't have facilities to Xray, and it may not be the fall thats causing it. Best Wishes x
