Has anyone totallu loss all sense of smell? I don't know if something is sour or not . so I have to throw out alot of things . I look at experation dates n adhere to that. But if I burn insense to try to bring my sense of smell back ..nothing works . without a sense of smell I really lose your appetite . I forget to eat due to lack of energy also an have dropped from 158 a yr ago to 110. But if it isn't salty I dont taste things . hope it's not just me ..help

Hi Pinky,

I lose my appetite from time to time without any apparent reason. But it comes back again. What I do now and again is clear my sinuses with a Neti pot and salt water. There must be other ways to do it though. Sorry,I wish I could help more.

I used a neti pot. My loss of smell has been a year..i just read a veey disturbing article avout loss of smell can predict early death. If this article was meant to scare me it worked. Says loss of smell could be related to alot of things n can predict that your days are numbered. Does anyone know anything about about this research? Scary

Thank u . I use a neti por but No sense of smell in a year. So I have to throw out food after a few days n Che k expiration dates cause I can't smell anything. Tried burning insense..but want smell it

Hello Pinky2017. I suffer from Post Nasal Drip, which is the root cause of my loss of taste and smell the two being linked, so I understand your frustrations.

I have been referred to an ENT consultant ( October appointment after a wait of 4mths) to see if the root cause can be identified and hopefully treated. I have had several steroid nasal sprays as well as nasal salt sprays either has worked. I was told that very often with the correct treatment the sense of taste and smell can return sometimes however the sense never returns.

I try to eat regularly but food has little interest if it has no taste, I now try to make food interesting by adding texture eg, nuts, raw root vegetables (not potatoes) fruits and colour contrasts and I stay away from souls and stews because the textures are unpleasant when there is no taste. Eating out at friends or in restaurants has no appeal, although I still do these things, I miss the smell of flowers, mowed grass and my favourite perfume.

Iam sorry I don't have a remedy for you only sympathy but perhaps you could ask for a similar referral to ENT and hopefully with the right diagnosis and treatment you will soon be back to normal

Thank u . i just hate thatci cant smell if something is sour so i have to throw out alot of food. And i reuse plastic water bottles n after awhile i would notice the smell of bleach n know to throw that bottle out. Now i cant smell so i dont know which water bottles are new n which arent. Guess i will havecto throw out all bottles n start over. Very frustrating

I know exactly how frustrating this whole thing is, I would go as far as to say depressing. I have bought an indelible pen (they have been advertised on the TV) from Amazon so I can mark thinks as OK because smell can't be relied on. Good Luck hope you get your senses back!!

Thank u but my research states that its rare to getcit back. If it was just sinus related i would . but copd patients rarely if evercregain sense of smell. It disturbed me when i read an article online from 2011that states sense of smell means oncoming death ..WTF OMG dont buy into that .

I wouldn't buy into that one either! Sorry the outlook for you doesn't look good re getting your taste and smell back. Hopefully you might be one of the lucky few!

I recognise this. I completely lost sense of taste and smell for months, just before diagnosis with COPD. Dr put me on carbocisteine, 6 a day. Three days later I suddenly realised I could smell hubby was making coffee out in the kitchen. Was wonderful.

What arr thesecpills ? Steroids . my doctor never offered a cure. That is why this site is so important .thank you so much.. I will write it down

You are needing prednisolone,which is a steroid ,take 5mg 8 a day and you will be brand new ,smell,and appetite will be excellent after a couple of days.

Well i cant take predisone . i getcblack outs when i take them

And even the little bit of steroids that are in spiriva cauze me to have chills and fever frequently

Pinky, please see your Doctor regarding your condition. Be very aware that prednisone gives and prednisone takes away. Most Doctors use it sparingly, so it can be used to maximum effect when you have an exacerbation or are otherwise in quite ill health. A high level of prednisone long term is normally not done in the states. Kind Regards, judg69

I have had a decrease in my sense of taste and smell. My husband will notice a smell and mention it to me, where as I didn't notice it. Also I don't taste foods as well as I did years ago.

I blame it on always having a stuffy nose. It seems like no matter how much my sinuses drain, I still have a stuffy nose. Must be due to the meds.

I feel the exact symptoms which didntchappen till after 2 yrs with copd . i will burn inscense to try to activate my smell. Doesnt work. The worst is not knowinv if something had gone bad. So i have to throw out what ever expiration date is. Sad cause if there was a fire i wouldnt smell it. I find eating salty things like plantains has developed into an addiction!! Salt taste . u have to make things tasty . bon appetite
