Decided today would be the day. Warm, not hot, very little breeze - ideal. Walked a route I haven't been brave enough to tackle in over a year. A walk I would think nothing of doing to exercise my daughter's little dog some time ago. Furthest I've been in the past year was a couple of hundred yards down the lane. I dd it! Had to stop twice at hills to catch my breath and it took me 24 minutes to cover the 1.06 km. My fitbit tells me that - gosh, that's 1.65 miles per hour. I really don't care - I set myself a challenge and I did it! Maybe next time I'll crack the 1.8 miles per hour!

First real walk in a year
Nanny that's fantastic you must be feeling proud slow and easy does it well done xxx
Thank you, Angiecbr. Yes, I must admit to feeling a bit pleased with myself. The first couple of hundred yards I found scary, but once I realised I could actually catch my breath, I was fine.
And why not be pleased with your lovley self you set the goals you did it and many more to come 😀😀😀
Yes well done, a little more each time, take a pat on the back, brilliant news and so pleased for you. Soon you could be being nagged to "slow down, I can't keep up" by your other half just like I constantly get now, and Sharon is 10 years my junior.
You "had to stop twice at hills to catch my breath", seriously, you tackled hills as well, I am suitably impressed.
Thank you so much. You are, in no small way, responsible for my achievement. Kept thinking about how hard you push yourself to achieve your goals and today I just went for it. The fear was real, but I went prepared as you suggested and it was fine. (They were only little hills, but a hill is a hill at this stage!)
Oh believe me, you should feel very proud! I'm so happy for you. Every little bit of an accomplishment should be celebrated. We may not be winning races but we aren't giving up either. Keep up the great work!!!
Thank you, Bobbi. I used to love walking, but since a bad case of pneumonia which put me in a wheelchair last year, I've been anxious about venturing out alone. Treadmill has helped me build my stamina and the wonderful support on this site built up my mental stamina so I was sufficiently confident to give it a go. Looking forward to repeating this little triumph.
I'm so happy for you. Makes me want to try harder.
Someone else on this site had exactly that effect on me - would be wonderful if you felt encouraged too! I know how hard it is, but slow and steady really does work. Took me weeks to make the transition from treadmill to the big outdoors. So happy to have done it - maybe I'll do a bit more or a bit faster next time. If I do the same I'll be happy - bit less well and I'll just try harder. Good luck and please let me know how it goes.
Well done! That's how I started to explore the streets around me.
Thank you. I'm off on holiday in a couple of weeks, and want to be able to enjoy the various ports we visit and can't do that from a ship's cabin! Glad to have got that first walk under my belt - onward and upward!
Well done, that's fantastic! You must be very proud of yourself! Now you've started you'll need to keep it up.
Mind you I'm a fine one to tell you that. I started trying to walk a mile a day - I lasted two days before my ankle said enough enough! I'm going to start again when I've had my next ankle injection- well that's the plan anyway!
I think slow and steady is the answer. I'm on the cancellation list for my injection in the hopes it will be done before I go on holiday! I'm having it done by ultra sound this time rather than the full blown day case method using an X-ray machine.
Well done Nanny49 you have been through long periods of being unwell what with the pneumonia which put you in hospital and that takes ages to fully recover from. I'm always glad to read of any members efforts relating to exercise and what works for them. I had set myself a goal to be more active this summer especially but for several issues I've not done very well! So all praise to you for "biting the bullet" so to speak, being brave, head strong and opening your front door and challenging yourself! Gold medal position for you on the podium!!!
Can't wait to read how you do this time next week!!
