There you are you can blame age for everything.I am 82, sexually active do 30 mins on an exercise bike 2 x day.. So what is age related I smoked until 12 years ago. Diagnosed prostate cancer 12 years ago no treatment p.s.a goes up and down with infections but 6 monthly checks. Had a bad winter/spring failed to pee and catheter for a couple of weeks. Then I felt sickly but decided it went off after a walk but one Saturday evening if I moved my head 10 degrees in any direction I would vomit and the room spun at 100 mph. A para medic who came was the best ,he gave me a jab to stop the vomiting and slowly I have got better. Diagnosed meniere's disease. 10 weeks on I am doing balance exercises 2 x daily. I am able to walk but need a stick to keep me straight..I have tinnitus constantly with various tones squeaks and one i like is a cats purr .Life seems to be getting back to a reasonable one I am getting used to the tinnitus being deaf in one ear and the wobbly walk. Think i may get arrested when I walk away from my car. I am down for an MRI scan but doubt I am a high priority and reading all the ;literature doubt it will show anything. Oh yes COPD I cough wuite a lot but it seems for a few days then a clear couple of days. Cant walk up a hill and now with the menieres walk on uneven ground. Get very tired .

Otherwise life is good

when i smoked I know my breathing was not as good as a non-smokers so, although it's just my opinion, I'd say yes, most probably ALL) smokers have a reduced lung function when compared to a non-smoker (or ex-smoker).

Why do you ask? It's the sort of question I would have asked to attempt to justify why I should continue smoking (when I did)

Hi was just a randon question based on my curiosity ... thank you for your reply

Well, diminished breathing could indicate an early sign of some sort of respiratory disease. I'm no doctor, but I can tell you from experience that smoking will eventually kill us if we keep it up. I smoked all my adult life and I've been quit six years. I can promise you no one enjoyed smoking as much as I did; I just always hated that it wasn't good for me. In 2011, I was diagnosed with lung cancer. I've had a half of a lung removed. I've taken 4 rounds of chemo and then I had a recurrence two years ago and wasn't a surgical candidate because of copd and ended up having 5 radiation treatments. Here it is, almost two years to the day, my recent routine CT Lung Scan revealed another new tumor. So the answer to your question is smoking will eventually lead to a respiratory disease or cancer. Cigarettes are fatal. Life is short. Make it count.

Hi I have to disagree as only 1 in 4 smokers will end up with a respiratory disease. The majority of smokers are fine as a lot of it depends on your genes.

Is that really so? It does seem strange. I have friends who smoked far more then me and seem to be unaffected!

Hi,

Yes, you may have Bronchitecsis as this is another lung decease that affects the bronchial tubes and is associated with COPD but they are two separate illnesses, so yes you can have a decreased lung and suffer with Bronchitecsis not copd. I was diagnosed with this, plus Asthma and also Sleep Apnoa and RA.

You can still enjoy your life but just take it easy and not over exert yourself too much and if possible give up or at least cut down on your smoking.

Hope your life picks up soon and you feel better.

I have and was born with Bronchitecsis and I am now in my 70's, try self meditation and try to feel a little more positive in life.

Kind regards,

I've always understood that COPD was a collection of chronic pulmonary disorders excluding asthma. So if your lungs are not fully functional it falls under that category. I have emphysema probably from smoking, which qualifies and if you have a history of smoking and your lungs are not A1 then you would be classified under that unbrella term.

i did smoke when i was 13 years old and i still won all 100 and 200 yard races for my school, also i won quite a few medals and cups for swimming, boxing, football, cricket, there is more but i dont want members on this forum to think am just using this post to brag.

so no. smoking did not rejuice my lung function when i was a boy.

but on second thoughts may be it did and i could of been a light weight boxing world champion, may be winning a record number of olympic good medals.

🤔

Yes --I do--am on oxygen 24/7

it's not just copd or lung cancer that smokers need to be concerned about. On average they die 10yrs younger than non-smokers, and a massive 67% die from smoking-related illnesses e.g. various cancers, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, dementia, Parkinson's - the risk of all these is increased by smoking...lung disease is just the most common
