Hi Rhiannon10 "Welcome" to our friendly and informative community.
Being diagnosed with Emphysema is always a worry especially when you have other chest problems.
You can do a lot to help yourself with diet and exercise and with the medication that is now available your condition can be managed quite well.
It's a bit early in the morning but I'm sure many others in a similar position as yourself will be along soon to give you better advice.
Take care.
John
Welcome, Wilma. This site is a mine of information and I've learned so much from other members' experiences since I joined it two years ago after a diagnosis of moderate COPD. Their suggestions have helped me stay at the same level - no deterioration. So do read around old posts and get to meet this wonderful surrogate family!
Hi Wilma, recently diagnosed myself, First of all it's mild so you need to do everything you can to prevent deterioration. Have you had your pneumonia and flu jabs? Secondly if you have any bad habits such as smoking stop! This is perhaps the biggest one thing you can do.
If you are overweight or underweight see a dietitian. You need to start eating a balanced healthy diet. Next start exercising gently at first and build up... This will be a life long commitment. This can help you greatly. If you can get your GP to put you on Pulmonary rehabilitation course
Infections can damage your lungs further so make sure your get them treated quickly. As you are mild you have a good chance of having a good quality of life if you take action now. The worst thing you can do is nothing.
Hello Wilma, and welcome to the group. I can't really add anything else to the good responses you've already had, but just wanted to say hello.
Take care and enjoy your day.

Hello Wilma, welcome to this friendly group. With over 20 years experience of bronchitis and asthma and having chest infections constantly I don't understand what you are worrying about. It seems to me that emphysema is just another name to put under the umbrella of COPD which you have been dealing with for over 20 years. If I'm wrong I'm sure someone of more experience than me will be along to say so.
Thank you for the warm welcome
