I just come out of hospital after six weeks. On returning home I find that I can hardly walk unaided .Because I have lost a lot of weight ( three stone)! my leg muscles have become very week. Can anyone tell me of any leg muscles exercise that they have used and were successful in returning them back to how they were before they went into hospital?

Muscles.
Hi Mike. Most exercises specifically for the leg muscles are quite tiring. If you feel that you may have muscle wastage, have a word with your doctor and he could refer you to a physiotherapist who could then devise a programme specifically for your problem.

Hi, remember that diet is important too, to build up your muscles you will need a high protein diet in tandem with exercise. See your GP and see if you can get help with this in way of a protein drink mix supplement.
Hi Mike, I recently lost 2 stone and found that my muscles seemed to be wasting - I was struggling to make the stairs and all my muscles were aching. Blood tests revealed that I was low on vitamin D. Within a day of taking a vitamin D supplement I began to recover - it has been like a miracle cure. Do get this checked out in case you are also low on vitamin D.
Best Wishes,
Helen
I lost 3 stone in ICU and that was mainly muscle. It can help lifting the legs up sitting on a chair to start with and lift and straighten the leg will help the quads loads

Join the club; I was in hospital for three weeks in December and have the same problem. My pulmonary rehab class has exercises for legs: walking! However slow, do it. Also try --
Sit-to stand, from a straight backed chair. Tiring
step-ups on the bottom step of your stairs.
leg lifts from the knees to straight out, sitting on a straight backed chair again.
leg lifts from the hips, ditto.
They should keep you whacked out!!

Hi mate lost 10% of my body weight over Christmas, lovely dose of pneumonia and septicemia...Have you seen a dietitian? My one is brilliant you need the right fuel before you start the exercise. A good one to look up on YouTube is Donna Wilson. She is a rehab specialist. Some of her sitting leg exercises my help you start building up your legs, Also there are a lot of breathing exercises.
Hi Mikefever, I empathise - I was in hospital for 18 days - not nearly as long as you , thankfully. Ended up losing 7kg weight. Discharged not able to walk without sticks - leg muscles were not capable of supporting me. Was told by respiratory consultants to try walking exercise even a few steps a day. It's been a long hall since 4 January when I was discharged.
Please to say I can now walk down the street without any aids. Patience and as they say ' one step at a time' .
Walk at your own pace. Listen to your body. Just a little more steps whenever possible. Keep s record of your walking - it helps. Be in good health.
