Vocal cord symptom relief

Hi all. Really suffering with vocal cord and chest pain right now. Any tips to get on top of it? Am doing my usual asthma / chest pain stuff - menthol sweets, steam inhalation, tea. Pain killers aren't touching it. Thanks.

Hi Dreoilin

Sorry to hear you are suffering so much. I am not an expert as some, but I would determine whether your symptoms are any worse than usual before deciding how to treat them. Night time is not easy. If you have tried everything and it is still too much to bear, I would seek medical advice.

Let us know how you get on.

Hope it settles.

Hi Aidi-Joll,

Thanks for replying. Yes, pain with breathing is worse tonight for some reason although my breathing is relatively easy apart from the pain (usually my breathing is difficult at night in a different way). Now hubby and kids all asleep I am not required to talk so that pain has reduced a bit. I just desperately need some relief so I can sleep. I have to talk all day tomorrow so that will be fun with barely any voice! The Drs are investigating things for me at the moment and I have to go in on Weds as they've found something on chest x-Ray or blood tests but I don't think it is anything sinister luckily. Also on new meds which are helping my breathing. I was wondering if anyone had any other tricks up their sleeve I could try tonight to ease the pain.

Will be thinking of you Jennie.

At least you are not alone.

The new medications may be causing you to experience a different pain response or you have sustained an injury through all the pressure.

Try to find a position you can bear and know that at least your breathing is better. Hopefully you will drift into a peaceful sleep.

Hi Jennie - these symptoms could be associated with reflux. You could try sleeping on your left side propped up a bit. If it reflux then gravity will help keep the acid lower down in your stomach where it belongs - the entrance to the stomach is on the right hand side so it will be higher up if you sleep on your left. If I were you I would have a chat with your GP - persistent pain shouldn't be ignored.

Hi O2trees, thanks for your reply. I am trialling Lansoprazole in case reflux is at play here. Also on new inhalers which allowed me to sleep in my bed for 2 weeks! Sadly last night I was back in my favourite armchair! I am waiting to see the GP about some X-ray and blood test results that they've found something on but I don't think it's anything nasty. Also waiting on the respiratory consultant. Hopefully I will finally get to the bottom of it :)

Poor you, I do feel for you. I know exactly how painful that horrible chest pain can be. I don't think I have any answersother than what you are doing. I find my asthma is always worse at night so have to be propped up with more pillows. I also take hot lemon juice with honey and pop dissolvable paracetamol in. It helps for a while but the coughing will resume. It just has to take its course. Maybe you have an infection and ought to get it checked out with your GP. Hope you feel better soon.

Hi Vere, thanks for your reply. Yes my asthma has been particularly uncontrolled at night this last year. I might try the honey, lemon and paracetamol drink - probably better for me than tea. Although, did you know tea helps because tanin opens the airways! I found this out a while ago. I had 2 weeks with less pain and better sleep so it was a blow for it to come back. Seeing the GP on Wednesday morning anyway so will tell them. :)

Hi Dreolin

Thanks for the tea tip, I didn't know that. I am also using an air purifier at the moment as I have a chest infection.

Hope your visit to the GP was successful.

Did they change the meds because of the vocal cords issue? Or it occurred after you changed the meds? Steroids can weaken the muscles in vocal cords and make you hoarse and/or give a continuous feeling that you need to clear your throat.

Best wishes

Hi Soulsaver. They changed the meds to try and control my asthma but my vocal cord problem has been ongoing far longer.
