Made me think of my Dad. HE died of Emphysema 27 years ago. He had a cough all,his life, discharged from the army during the war because of it but never any treatment. He was a bricklayer, smoked all his life, rolled his own a lot. He was almost 80 when he died, and near the end when the doctor would call in to prescribe some abs, he would point to the fags and tut. But by then dad was making a thin cigarette last for ages, purely a habit of something in the mouth. I feel so cross he had no real help, and that my nderstanding of his illness was so poor.
As you say, it was almost a joke, fags were called coffin nails, and people put up with so much then, no wonder our hospitals are so busy now, much more understanding and care.
