I have COPD and since May Type 2 diabetes too. I have been eating a low carbohydrate, high fat diet since my diabetes was diagnosed and I find it very helpful in keeping my blood glucose at the right numbers. Since going low carb high fat my cholesterol has reduced from 4.4 to 3.7. I also walk at least 3/4 times a week and that helps my breathing I find. If you are interested have a look at dietdoctor.com/low-carb/foods or other sites that you can google if you put in low carbs. I found them helpful
4 is a great number. I had always thought my cholesterol was fine at 4.4 but they changed the target once you have diabetes and instead of 5 and below its 4 and below. The Doc wanted me on statins but I asked for a couple of months to shift it down just with eating differently and it worked for me.
Very good advice Murray. Low carb/high fat Paleo diet is great for control of type 2 Diabetes and explodes the myth that high fat equates to high cholesterol, a view perpetuated by Big Pharma wishing to sell their statins and the medical profession which has manifestly failed to give good dietary advice and failed absolutely to control the explosion of type2 Diabetes.
Be very wary of processed foods labelled low fat as these normally substitute sugar for fat to replace the taste taken out by reducing fat content.
Ask yourself about life in the 60's before processed foods and cholesterol scares. We ate fatty, tasty meat, fried with lard, ate real butter, with home prepared fresh field vegetables delivered by the greengrocer. No low fat ready meals and surprise surprise little or no Type2 Diabetes.
Hello and welcome. Now you've found this site you won't be solitary again, unless you need a rest from too many kittens. 🐱 It sounds as though you're doing really well. xxx
Hello Watford Girl. Thank you for your reply. This cold weather has knocked me about a bit. Lungs hurt. I take my inhalers like the good boy that I am. Not sure they are working really. Or maybe it's just that I'm finding the weather colder than before.
Still I shall continue and look forward to the warmer weather (hopefully) and let the sun draw the pain out of my arthritic knees.
The weather is colder than before! Very cold wind which seems to make everything worse. Supposed to be getting warmer tomorrow so everything may hurt a little less. x
Hi SolitaryMan, I'm more or less in the same boat as you. COPD, diabetic T2, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, glaucoma, arthritic hands. Wife died, only son died, daughter with mental health problems, living on my own. Like you say "a bit of a mess".
I sometimes wonder why I bother at 85. But then I'm lucky in having my little furry friend and campervan I bought a couple of years ago. Coming on here I realised there are a lot of people far worse off than me.
Not much help to you I'm afraid, but sometimes it helps just to count your blessings.
My suggestion would be try and get out, at least in the daytime maybe a breatheasy group in your area or a freindship group through Age UK, they have them in many cities. Unless of course you are housebound due to COPD. Even joining a gym for older people can help or there is now walking football for older persons like ourselves and keep fit classes that can be tailored to health need. The national Age UK line can advise whats in your area or the local library & council website. Being on your own makes it harder to build confidence to go out alone especially if you fear being taken ill. I am in the on your own club a widow for over twelve years now., so understand the difficulties. There are singles groups out there too, plus here of course if you want a chat ect or questions answered. Welcome enjoy your day, keep warm and take care.
SolitaryMan nice to meet you and you've certainly received many replies to your post. That shows you are talking about a subject that many have themselves,so will completely understand what you are discussing. Others may just share having a chronic lung illness, or being the carer to one so from all walks of life, you'll get advice and support here on thus forum. I hope you like it and I'm sure you'll just fit in fine!
