Hey everyone,

I have some thick phlegm in my vocal chords and I can't speak. I was wondering if there is any way I can remove all the phlegm in a few days...

Thanks

Hello there, I cannot promise you how long the phlegm will remain, but it should get less if you stay well hydrated. It's very important to drink lots of water, as it helps to thin the phlegm.

Excess mucous can be caused by several things and come from several places (nose throat lungs) and all ends up in the throat, so hard to track down:

Gargle with a cup of hot salty (half teaspoonful ish) water, gargle the whole cup at first - morning & before you go to bed, more often if you find it helps and you need it; keep well hydrated; avoid coffee & dairy; avoid alcohol; ask Dr to prescribe Carbocistine which thins mucous; ask Dr for Omeprazole to avoid excess acid, don't eat after evening meal.

Do them all, if that get's rid, stop/add back in one at a time to see if it comes back.

How is your sinuses? If they are part of the problem try a netti pot & saline rinse. Or Beconase (or the like) from Dr...

Good luck.

Thanks for the post. I too have a similar problem. As I am alone most of the day, apart from "Scruffy" my Yorkie, when I do speak my voice changes from nearly soprano down to almost baritone even within the same sentence. I have forever apologising and 'clearing' my throat. I am on tablets to moisten my phglem and I am frequently coughing it up which luckily also shows no chest infections.

This has only happened in the last 18 months since my COPD became severe & I gave up smoking 30 a day ( I do use the odd puff of an e-cigarette but my GPS says that's OK). It doesn"t effect me otherwise but whilst a small price to pay it is very irritating.

Best wishes,

Markrh
