Enphysema

My wife has emphysema and was recently in hospital with an infection when she was discharged she was very short of breath and started coughing up blood in her sputum it is very dark and thick she is very worried as our doctor seems to think it is nothing to worry about and it will fix itself, anybody have similar experience?

Hi, sorry to hear that your wife is still unwell, sometimes when coughing hard you can burst tiny blood vessels, I am sure if the doctors were concerned about it they would have taken a sputum sample ,

If it is continuing then I would go back to your GP even just to put your mind at rest, as it's understandable that you wife is worried but she needs to rest and get well, I often have this when I blow my nose and it's really dark sorry it doesn't help.

I personally would be asking for a second opinion or at the very least ask why she is coughing up blood. I have suffered with Emphysema for around 25 years and been hospitalised with a severe infection even constantly coughing I have never brought up blood.
