Have been reading tad about it ... Is all complicated and gets even worse if diabetic BUT have to excuse my ignorance as not expert

But from what I gather your musicals hurt when your body is runing round looking for some molecule that's why athletes drink glucoses to help bodies metobolic side recover SOME even drink the own urine.

Rank ... I know

When we breath THERE is machical I.e lungs and then this our metoblic breathing C02 drives our respority rate.

Is all very confusing BUT if doctors could figure out how it works WE would be 3/4 cured

Diabetes and glucose is good example of how confusing all THIS co2 is with DIABETIC KETOACIDOSIS AND THE HYPERGLYCEMIC

I retain co2 during sleep because my breathing is shallow due to poor lung function. It can make you feel sluggish and v tired all the time and it's not good for heart. I have been using a bipap machine for a number of years. What have your Drs suggested?

rikki0777 ,

I am a co2 retainer. When we breathe in, our lungs take in O2, when we breathe out we are ridding our lungs of CO2. The lungs make this exchange.

There are several ways that we can help our lungs make this exchange.

1) Breathe in through the nose while counting to 4, then purse your lips and breathe out while counting to 8. Do this several timesv a day.

2) Blow up a balloon several times a day. This also helps strengthen the muscles in the lungs.

3) Use a bi-pap machine. Your doctor would have to prescribe one for you.

All three are part of my daily routine. I take several balloons with me wherever I go. My 4 year old granddaughter loves to "race" me blowing these up! She also loves to show me how to breathe pursing my lips...she is a treasure!

You can also Google co2 retention and read for days the causes of it and how to treat it.

I know that too much of it in your blood causes SOB!! I wish you well and hope you are breathing easy!!

Run round the block a couple of times !!!! only joking, I am the other way on 24/7 oxygen but I do know too much is nearly as bad as too little. Sure you will get some good advice on here, but don't be frightened of asking the medical people, not all Consultants are good to get on with and some don't speak freely to you, but there some good people in the medical practice. Some seem to look at my age,79, and refuse to discus my health with me thinking I'm not all there, that does annoy me, whilst I have loads wrong with me the Brain is still functioning. Best of luck rikki0777, sure that in another hour or two you will have some sound answers

That is so annoying! I hate it when I'm presumed to fit into someone's narrow minded idea of what 'older people' are like, the only consolation is in knowing that one day, - (if they're lucky), they'll find out, and will know just how annoying some younger folk can be.

I also retain c02 and the problem occurs during sleep when we breath shallow and dont blow off carbon dioxide..

A blood gas shows if its too high but you can also feel it because you wake with headaches and feel tired and confused..so look out for these symptoms but if it gets to high you will probably be given a nippy machine to use during sleep

Make sure you get the bipap with a full mask. It's important you take care of this because mine went too far before they discovered it and I ended up unconcious. Fortunately my son found me and 911 responded in less than five minutes or I would not be writing this now. It took 12 hours in emergency and another 9 days in ICU and then 10 days in a rehab facility to bring me back. Sleeping with this mask on and using oxygen 24/7 has made all the difference. Please don't ignore this. Good luck and good health

I use the nasal, do you think the full face is better? I have borderline co2 retention.

Hi Rikki,

I too have co2 retention and was prescribed a Bi-Pap machine by Harefield. It applies positive airways pressure to your lungs to aid your breathing, and expel the co2 gasses while you sleep.

Hope this helps.

Hi Rikki,

You've got the answer! You need to have this done through you respiratory consultant. You 'll need blood gases done and support with using the BiPAP machine, as well as advice on how much oxygen you use - if you do. Too much oxygen means you retain more carbon dioxide. In other words, you can get advice but what's prescribed for you needs to be bespoke - as with any medication.

Good luck,
