Why do I always feel so tired ,even after 8 hours sleep I wake and feel that I have not been to sleep.I am on 1 litre of oxygen and more or less 24/7 . I do have COPD is it the norm for people with this condition, I am 71 not that old in today's world. Does anybody have any general thoughts.

Hi Christine,
Have you been tested for sleep apnoea or CO2 retention? Both conditions cause the sort of tiredness you describe. The treatment is similar too. I think you ask your GP about it, or better still your respiratory consultant or nurse.
You could also call the BLF helpline (03000 030 555) in the morning and I'm sure they'd be able to help and advise you what to do next.
I agree with you - 71 is not old! You shouldn't have to feel sleepy all day. The best of luck with this. Let us know how you get on.

I do have CO2 Retention But I will see my doctor about it. I know I take a lot of painkillers but I feel tired before I take them.
Pete is asleep now Christine and says he is always tired. I think some of it is to do with the drugs he takes and he doesn't often sleep well. Xxx
Hello Christine,
If you had said you slept fitfully it would be understandable, but to feel so tired after 8 hours of good quality sleep can't be right. I have moderate copd but am not on oxygen. Great answers from the others on here. You need some help and advice from whoever you have confidence in.
All the best and let us know how you get on please?
xx
Hi Hidden after having a good nights sleep you shouldn't be waking up tired. It sounds more like you are suffering from fatigue which is totally different from being tired. With fatigue you can have a good nights sleep and still wake up feeling shattered.
If it is fatigue, there are many causes and you need to seek medical advise to find out what is causing it.
Regards. John
