Confused...

This is my first post on here so here goes...

I am 38 yrs old and suffered with asthma for as long as I can remember, and have taken inhalers of some description all my life. 2 years ago  I had pleurisy and pneumonia on my right lung at the same time. Since I have been having pain in the bottom of my right lung every day, really painful in the morning and gets more manageable throughout the day, lots of shortness of breath daily after simple activities. I am currently on symbicort 412- 2 puffs in the morning and evening, Montekulast in evening, Spriva-2 puffs in afternoon, and average 10-20 puffs of ventolin a day. Taking Co codamol for pain.

Sorry for the long one but here is my point I have only ever been diagnosed with severe asthma, and the pain remains unanswered. I am now waiting to see the respiratory team at the hospital as this seems to be just dragging on. Any ideas...similar symptoms..

It's great that you're going to see a specialist. I also had pleurisy at the bottom of my right lung on two separate occasions so I always recognise the pain if it returns - which it does intermittently although not full blown pleurisy. It seems there's a weakness now in that area. 

To take cocodamol so long us just not right at all. You need a thorough investigation. In your shoes I'd settle for nothing less than a CT scan to see clearly what going on. If you've got a bit of cash I'd see a specialist privately who can then get you on his/her NHS list.

GPs can hear pleurisy through their stethoscopes, it makes a rasping noise from the two membranes rubbing against each other instead of gliding Welty as they're supposed to.

A great reply from peege, l don't have your pain, so l cannot help you, but l do have Asthma and COPD and 20 puffs of Ventolin does sound as if you Meds need looking at.

Hello & a very warm welcome Mr Kipling. I'm sorry to hear you're in pain & hope your respiratory team can give you some answers as to the cause. 

I don't have Asthma but I do have COPD & I only very rarely use my reliever inhaler. I think you're taking too much Ventolin, indicating your meds are not controlling your condition. 

I would certainly mention this to your GP or consultant. Maybe you need a meds review.

Hi, Mr-Kipling.  I have moderate COPD and get soreness and pain in my lower left ribcage, caused by my diaphragm overworking as it tries to get my rigid ribs to move more than they are able.  My osteopath showed me how to ease the spasms by tucking my fingers under my lowest rib bones and breathing in and out as I do so.

So do get your pain checked out by a medic so that you find out what is causing it and how to deal with it.  All the best, M.

Peege has it so right.  My two penneth.  If you are taking 20 puffs of ventolin then I would expect that you have a raised heart rate and twitching more noticeable at night.  If not then I would say you are not using the inhaler correctly.  I would suggest that a spacer is used and see what happens then.   I had similar after a bad infection but it was the fluid and gunk in my lung that was causing all my pain.  It took over a year to clear for me.  But you do need to see a specialist.
