Hi, i was diagnosed with COPD in March this year and stopped smoking within 12 days. It was one of the hardest things i have ever done. As many will tell you on here, as soon as you stop smoking you slow the progression. In the beginning i used chewing gum, but really missed my cigs at nighttime with my red wine. So i bought an e cig kit...rechargeable. Best thing i ever did. For months i avoided friends who smoked...and still do. I now cannot stand the smell of smoke and will cover my nose with my hand if i am near anyone who smokes.
I smoked up to 2 packs a day for 47 years, i wish i had never started but so pleased i managed to stop.
I believe that if i can give up after 47 years anyone can, it just depends if you want a better quality of life or not.

If you don't quit then the progression will hasten quickly. The only thing shown to slow down the progression is to stop smoking. Now, there have been some studies that have shown FEV1 preservation using ICS/LABA and Spiriva, I believe it was the TORCH or UPLIFT studies. But here is the thing, as we age our lungs shrink, and FEV along with it. Depending on how much damage you may already have, why lose more with smoking? The meds make it so you can breath easier, that's it. They don't halt decline. I would quit immediately. And start to exercise. You are in for a world of hurt if you don't stop soon.
Hi I was diagnosed with copd in 2012. My lung function was 63 per cent, I had regular chest infections and had to give up work, I cut down on the cigs alot but didn't want to stop, this week I have set another bedside of my mother in law watching her fight for breathe and it scared the life out of me, she passed, away on Tuesday. But I am pleased to say I haven't picked a cig in in 8 days. I went to the smoking sensation clinic today and produced a result of 0 for carbon monoxine, I am officially a none smoker I smoked for 33 years all my adult life. I am not going to say it has been easy probably the hardest thing I have done, but I am so proud of myself. I think with quitting smoking you have to be determined to servitude through no if buts or maybe. The best advice I would give anyone have at least one person at hand that you can get good support from and keep your mind active with other things, I wish you all the luck in the world x
Hi Mojo17..I started smoking when I was 13yrs old (I am now 61) but stopped 3yrs ago when I was admitted to hospital and my oxygen levels were dangerously low and as well as my asthma they told me I had copd and bronchiectasis..I decided right away that I would stop..the wierdest thing was that I found it so easy..before I was always scared to stop..I don't know if it would help you but my son stopped after reading Alan Carrs Easy Way to Stop Smoking..or these E-fags..I hope I don't sound holier than thou because that's far from the truth..in fact after watching a film where the lady was told she only had so long to live..my daughter said mum what would you do if that was you..my answer was I would go to the shop buy 200 cigs and smoke every one of them..can't print what my daughter said to that hahaha she absolutely hates smoking..Please keep in touch if and let us know how things are going..xBrendx
Hi Mojo 17, I was diagnosed with COPD about 12years back. I started smoking aged 13 and smoked right up to June this year. (now 68) I was told by numerous Doctors and Consultants to pack up, but they really don’t have a clue what that entails as they have never smoked in their lives!
Quitting is hard and it was something I was going to do when I wanted….NOT when I was told.
I quit using E-cigs (the rechargeable one) not easy, but I’ve done it. The liquid used for Vaping contains Nicotine which helps you to beat the addiction, and the vaping pipe gives you something to put in your mouth, to help with the physical habit.
I noticed a reduction in the amount of Phlegm and the amount of coughing within a couple of weeks. It hasn’t cured me, I still have COPD but I certainly feel a lot better than when I was smoking.

Hi Mojo. I have both of those diseases, and smoked for 35+ years until 1992. It was the hardest thing that I've ever done, but under fear for my life - I made it. There were no Ecigs back then and I tried - acupuncture, hypnosis, pills , mouthwash (which made the smoke taste awful) and false cigarettes. None of that worked and then I found Nicorette chewing gum (there was only the original flavour then) and that's how I (eventually) did it! It took several attempts and cost me quite a lot, but I don't think I would be here today if it weren't for that. Trouble was, I then got addicted to the chewing gum which was costing more that the cigs back then. Lol
Good luck with whatever method you choose....don't let the weed beat you! Walter Raleigh has a lot to answer for.
Same here Nikkers and I'm still addicted to the gum.
I have COPD since 24th April 2007 because that was the last day I smoked, when your body is on shut down as mine was my daughter called the ambulance to me, I was in hospital for 2 week when i came out I was told another cigarette would kill me. that did the trick for me. b4 that I tried patches lasted 4 months. I think you have to be in the right frame of mind to give up, As i was
Thanks everbody for the good advice all I need to do now is get on with it
I gave up smoking 7 years ago using the NHS cessation initiative, it took 3 months to be completely over the cravings and had to change my life habits to be successful but after that there was no looking back. I have just been diagnosed with COPD and am kicking myself for ever smoking and causing damage to my own lungs in the first place, thank goodness I stopped. please try it for yourself if you are struggling, your health will give you the extra willpower you need
Please try hard to pack it in - I did it overnight with an e-cig after 60+ years of 20 a day, that was almost 6 years ago. There are lots of methods but that was the only one that worked for me and the health improvement starts immediately.
The e-cig is a great way of giving up and the closest thing to smoking there is. I gave up by using chewing gum and nicotene lozengers. Several years down the line and I'm now addicted to the lozengers. Although I haven't been officially diagnosed with COPD, I was being kept awake all night through my own wheezing and coughing. I had chest infections every few weeks, with SOB. I guess I'm afraid to ask for the tests, because my grandmother had COPD and my Father died from it. My mother who has had respiratory problems for years and was told she had asthma, was finally diagnosed with COPD and heart failure last year after she was admitted to hospital and put on HDU. My respiratory problems improved straight away, though haven't disappeared, so you have done the right thing. I also take Sulforaphane, which is a derivative of Brocolli and has been clinically proven to help COPD and N-Acetlycysteine. Both can be bought as supplements and I take it three times a day during a chest infection, or when my chest is tight. In the winter I also take Vit D3 and drink carrot juice for the Vit A, which someone else on here recommended. Most chronically ill people are deficient in Vit D. I also take high dose Vit C during a chest infection. I'll try and find the links for clinical evidence for Sulforaphane. A pharmacist also told me, that a good strong cup of Coffee opens up the airways and acts in the same way as Theophylline, but don't take if you have heart problems.
Hi mojo17, I have Copd and Bronchiectasis and I smoked 60 a day, when I was diagnosed it was hard , but it left me with two choice's ,so to give me the best chance
I gave up the cig's, with me it was the fact that I wanted to try and stay as healthy and live as long as I am able, now I know that doesn't help you give up smoking and I know its not easy but try and think of the alternative, good luck and please try your best,
Hi Mojo I was diagnosed with COPD 11 years ago I had smoked for 25 years and a 20 a day smoker my daughter got me in to the quit clinic under false pretences and I was given a letter for my GP to prescribe champix.
The beauty of champix is you continue to smoke while taking it and between 8 and 14 days you feel like you don't want to smoke. The mistake people make is when they stop smoking they stop the champix its like a course of antibiotics you have to take the full course.
My fear of giving up smoking was over whelming I couldn't visualise not ever smoking again but I'm so grateful my daughter did get me in that clinic I would of been on oxygen now
I can't take champix they don't mix with my other meds
hi there i have the same problem tried electronic cigs but get a really bad throat as i have other probs i cant stop
Hi folks,
I tried hard to quit, but I have failed yet again. (:
Have tried the quit site, got down to below ten (from twenty roll ups per day.)
My Carbon Monoxide was down to 2.
Tried the E-Cigg,and the Lozenges.
Also tried the strong patches, had them on 24hrs.
I'm ashamed to say I am still rolling and smoking ciggs.
I know I should stop,to help my condition.
I have posted before on here, last summer.
I have still not stopped.
I want to stop as I have been diagnosed with severe Emphysema 2012 after a CT scan of my lungs.
How can I stop if I can't help myself, because of my strong addiction/habit.
My last resort I think, is to ask my doctor for the Champix
Good luck to all who are trying so hard to beat this demon.
I have tried everything and can't quit, champix gave me Los of side effect I fing e-cig best, but I think I just enjoy cigs so much. And I think what the heck not many pleasures in life, and I do enjoy my cigs I have copd and Bronchiectasis
Sorry but if you do not stop it------it will stop you. Today you have a choice, so make the right one. As an ex smoker with COPD Emphysema I promise you it gets betters.
Had another scan on my lungs a couple of weeks ago, result is I now have variant asthma added to the emphysema.
I still have not been able to quit smoking.
Told I really must stop smoking......................Yes,I know that !!!
I'm really feeling angry with myself today.
I feel like shouting out loud...leave me alone !!!
