I'm a trained chef who has set about designing & making food products which can help to relieve the COPD symptoms you suffer from. I would be most grateful if you could let me know what time of day you find your symptoms are at their worst so either morning, midday or evening? As by knowing this I can produce products which are in keeping with that time of day for example cereal for breakfast or a roast for dinner.
Many Thanks.

It does indeed, thank you very much. Could you just let me know as well what time of day you find your symptoms are at their worst please so either morning, midday or evening?
I'm pretty well at the moment (and I don't have cold).
I'd be interested in low fat, low acid & high energy meals as I just get tired easily.
Many folks with severe conditions are underweight & have trouble putting weight on then there are others overweight or obese due to the inability to take exercise and/or steroid use which alters your appetite (I think) but you probably know all that 😃
Hi Peege, thanks for your swift response. I'm very glad your well but if you did have to say a time of day your symptoms are at their worst what would that be?
Haha I did indeed, the extra weight also makes it harder for these people to breathe as it pushes onto their lungs. Food for thought for me.
Hi Mandy I do agree with you, but I have found tomatoes really inflame me, thought it was a lot of nonsense about the deadly nightshade foods (tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, aubergines and a few others) did cut out tomatoes for about 8 weeks, thought it hadn't made any difference, then had 2 of the tiniest tomatoes, was in pain for hours, and really breathless for about 24 hours, shame because I love tomatoes and all the other stuff that's meant to be bad. Lovely day here today, just mucking about in the garden, hope your having a good one x
Oh i completely agree there are foods that use to make my friends little girl stand on her head.......im just confused about his saying he can alleviate COPD symptoms as mine is breathlessness im not sure any food would help that....
Perhaps he means the other things that can go with it but as he dosnt answer messages there isnt much way to find out x
That's a very good question. I've done some considerable research into COPD, having also consulted with COPD specialists, and certain foods are shown to reduce inflammation of the airways which in turn reduces the amount of mucus produced allowing you to breathe easier. I hope this helps. If you could let me know what time of day you find your symptoms are at their worst I would be most grateful.
Ok now thats interesting because i am a patient of Harefield transplant unit and we are given a lot of paper work to read about taking care of ourselves to prepare for transplant and nowhere in that information is there anything about eating certain foods to help improve the breathing its all aimed at keeping a good weight and a healthy normal diet ..........................
its something that i will be asking the team about in September when i go back because i think that sort of advice should be everywhere including the Pulmonary rehabilitation classes because they dont tell you about that there either
As for me personally im at my very worse on a morning
I find nowadays with my COPD that I can't eat spicy food eg curry unless it's really mild
How we differ ! I love my donar kebabs. I even have bottles of chilli sauce at home so I can put more on ! I love Vindaloo as well. I've tried phall but that's a little too hot sometimes.
Oh I used to love donner kebabs but can't get them locally now. I actually had an Indian curry tonight, chicken dopiaza. I really enjoyed it but just took it nice & easy! Lovely! 😋
What about a sharwarma? Sorry but it's replaced the donner in my life. He he he of course with both chilli garlic and jalapeños. Honk honk I'm a piglet (no offence meant towards piglets)
Dangerous don't LOL its usually chicken or lamb or mixed. But 'real' chicken layered and spiced up and cooked like the grease ball of a donner served on a freshly baked flat bread with salad and sauce. If you put any weight on or get addicted don't blame me. Also about 3 quid so happy days.
In terms of it being a money making scheme that couldn't be further from the truth. I do however appreciate where you are coming from as being diabetic I have also come up against companies just looking to exploit my illness for the sake of profit. However, the reason I have ventured into this project is because both my mum and dad have COPD (my mum chronic bronchitis and my dad emphysema) also the condition sadly took the life of my dear grandad. By no means will I be taking even a single penny of profit from the products produced (if they make any) it will all be going to a COPD charity (the BLF has been mooted by my advisors). I hope you now understand that there are people out there who genuinely care and I'm one of them :).
There are quite a lot of respiratory conditions. I only have personal knowledge of Bronchiectasis and Asthma. Although bronchiectasis is completely different to copd we have many of the same symptoms. SOB of course.
Many bronchs make copious amounts of mucus.
Lots of folks on here have reflux.
As we have to take frequent anti biotics we can get gastro intestinal problems and/or thrush.
Inflammation plays a huge part in all lung conditions.
It doesn't effect me at a certain time of the day, more like all day, proably better following physio.
It's great that you have approached folks who are actually dealing with these problems on a daily basis. I just wonder if it would be helpful to you to speak also to a respiratory dietician. They would know the facts of what, if anything would help to reduce mucus and inflammation.
Good luck Mark and please let us know how it goes.

Well, what a rant! Perhaps this chef plans to do as I do, pass on recipes for free. I have, over the past four years devised recipes for my daughter who was having 3-5 day migraines until it discovered she is sensitive to gluten, maize, tomatoes and other foodstuffs. Now she only has the occasional attack.
I contibute food my sister's church for the Harvest supper since so many attendants, including the Minister, have coeliac disease.I always print off the recipes for people to take with each dish. Pro bono could well be his motive and it would not amaze me if diet could play a role in alleviating lung disorders, new discoveries come along all the time. A bit of tolerance, please, until you know the motives behind that post. Polly4acre
I really appreciate the support Polly4acre and you have hit the nail on the head. And, good on you for all the good you do :). Could you let me know what time of the day your conditions are at their worst please as that would be really helpful.
If our blood gets slightly more acidic from normal, we blow it off as we breathe out. I once made a sweet/sour sauce by taste rather than by measuring ingredients and gave my then husband a bad attack of the wheezes as his COPD and asthma made him struggle to blow off the vinegar and fruit juice acids in the sauce.
Portion control is also quite important, as large meals in the stomach press on the lungs and diaphragm, making it harder to breathe, and increase the risk of acid reflux and acidic fumes invading the airways.
Vinegar fumes !!!!! my worst enemy, starts me off coughing....brown sauce also.
Never suffered with acid reflux, but large meals do press on my lungs and diaphragm..so a lay down and a good snooze are vital for me after a big meal...I do get some funny looks from the other diners in the restaurant !!
Thank you for that insight eregendal. Could you let me know what time of the day your conditions are at their worst please as that would be really helpful.
The time of day doesn't usually affect me. I get exacerbations when I exert myself too much, overeat, or find myself in a very humid or polluted atmosphere - that includes some air fresheners, aromatic oils and perfumes.
Oh by the way, like many on this site I am sick, but certainly not vulnerable.
We are a bunch of intelligent, well informed people, who are quite capable of making our own choices and decisions over what does / does not help us, and we share this information with each other.
Loving the idea of food helping with any illness, COPD being just one, but we have had no reply from said chef as yet so am a tiny bit cynical and suspicious. Pipe up chef if you can really offer help or just pipe down. Thanks. xx
Hi Mark, thank you for replying and I do appreciate how busy you must be. I am carer for my husband and he has sarcoidosos and COPD. I would say there is no specific time of day that Pete is worse and I would pin a medal on the person who managed to get him to eat special foods. It seems like a good idea but one we will pass on thank you.
ivgot241 if you`ve just this second joined I think you should calm down. He may be naive but I feel the intention was not to "mess with vulnerable people " but to gain some knowledge of how certain foods affect us. Some people have replied quite sensibly, which is what the original poster wanted. Do no foods affect you ? Maybe you`re one of the lucky ones.
Thank you for your support it has been well received. Could you tell me when your COPD conditions are at their worst in the day please? So either Morning, Midday or Evening.
I feel worse usually when I get up and start to walk but do not really do breakfast- just a croissant - ok as I move a bit more but only have small meal - little and often is what they recommend - start to go downhill again later in the day. Good luck with your project - let us in on any tips you find please thank you.
I would just like to start by saying a big thank you to everyone who has taken the time to comment on this post I really do appreciate it, it has been most helpful. In terms of it being a money making scheme that couldn't be further from the truth. By no means will I be taking even a single penny of profit from the products produced (if they make any) it will all be going to a COPD charity (the BLF has been mooted by my advisors). I will be posting more questions over the next couple of weeks which if you could answer that would be great as it will help me to produce products which are as beneficial to you as can be.
