Hello and welcome to the site, you will learn a lot about looking after your copd here :)

I have Emphysema , it was severe 11 years ago but is more like moderate now.

I've been on ambulatory oxygen for over two years and do a lot while wearing it :)

Its important to get your flu jab, you should be on the list to have one yearly. You need one pneumonia jab ( one is all you need )

Stop smoking if you do, you will be very glad you did.

Get plenty of gentle exercise ( try get on the Pulmonary Rehab program , ask your doctor ) and try to have a good nutritional diet.

Stay positive and keep as well as possible by avoiding sick people! Any questions just 'post' it. :)

Stopping smoking is the one single thing that will help with any lung disease if you carry on smoking your lungs will just get worse

Hello David, 11 years ago I used to smoke, 😯you name it I've smoked it! 😇I used to think it was my friend 😆and it took me 8 attempts to stop , I thought I'd never be able to stop !! 😮but with help from nicotine replacement patches I did ! 😊and now I'm so glad I did!!!

30 years smoking has left my lungs in a bad way BUT they have improved because I stopped when I did.

I think the real incentive was watching emphysema take my Mum, it seems we have a genetic type , our bodies don't produce the protein needed to protect us from infections etc., just thinking of my Mum perched on the edge of her chair attached to that huge cylinder of oxygen , ( that wasn't helping her feel any better ) just makes me well up. Please, please care about your health and at least consider stopping.

Take care, hugs huff xxx

Davidsurman,why? Why won't you quit?

in reply to

That's crazy! You'll only make your symptoms worse & suffer so much more if you keep smoking. It's the 1st thing you need to do when diagnosed with COPD. Please reconsider, you'll benefit greatly by stopping

Hi David, if you like t o chat you couldn't find a better place. Really great caring folks gather here. I don't post often but I read through it daily. You will find funny stories, jokes and compassion and those that experience the same things with this disease. I spend most of my time alone but someone will tell a joke or story that makes me laugh until I can't breathe and that dangerous. Lol Have been so thankful for this forum and think you will too.

Welcome

Shirley

Hi Dave and welcome to the site. you will definitely find plenty of lpvely people on here to talk to and the more knowledgeable members always give great advice if you need it.

Whilst stopping smoking is the one thing that will have the best positive impact on your lung disease, nobody on here will judge you or disrespect your decision to continue smoking. There are quite a few people on here, who do still smoke.

Keep coming on here for a chat and to make some great virtual friendships. xx

Hi, i was diagnosed nearly 4 months ago, smoked over 45 years never thought i would give up. Checked the internet after my diagnosis, found that the number 1 thing to slow the progression is to stop smoking. Reduced my smoking immediately, went from an average of 35 a day to 20, 12, 5 and then down to 3 a day. Stopped smoking after 12 days, now nearly 4 months. Still have cravings but they are getting less and less. What does help when i have a glass of wine at night is an electronic cigarette.

Good for you Swerv, you are doing really well😁 I don't think I would still be here if I hadn't stopped when I did!

Bet you've saved a few bob as well😁 huff xxx

Hi Huff, not saved much money as cigs out here are only just over a pound a pack. But i have noticed after only 4 months improved breathing and i can't get over my sense of smell. Fortunately not put any weight on as i had a glass of water every time i had a craving.

Brilliant! I wish I'd been as sensible as you! It's not good to carry weight with copd. I'm very pleased you are feeling the difference in your breathing!

Stay well!😊 huff xxx

Welcome to the site David. Don't feel intimidated because everyone was preaching at you about smoking. Thats your choice and you already know it's bad. Feel free to ask any questions you

may have. How long have you had copd?

There are people on here, that have had it many years, and are still doing quite well. Good luck to you, and I hope you'll stay with the forum.

I was diagnosed 8 years ago with severe COPD. However I was having an exacerbation at the time and a further test two years later graded me as moderate. I am now graded at the pointy end of severe, again.. I gave up smoking 6 or 7 years before my initial diagnosis. I daresay had I not done that I wouldn't be here to tell the story. I found quitting smoking extremely difficult but amazingly I did it.

No one is preaching at you about smoking, they are giving you excellent advice that will add years to your life and make your remaining years far more pleasant, gasping for every breath is truly awful. There will be many good years ahead of you if you take good care of yourself.

I wish you well.

Hi everyone, I am also new to the site and looking for support. I was recently diagnosed with copd. I havent had a fag for 10 years although had smoked 20 a day for 30 years. Id gone to the docs with cough, swollen ankles, infected bites on my legs following a trip abroad, a wheezy chest. Xray was clear. Blood test ok. I failed the breathing test badly and when pushed for a percentage, my gp said I had about 65% of what I should have. Spiriva made me feel 100% better. Went to nurse a month later for instruction on breathing exercises and she said I had asthma and the copd diagnosis was wrong. Does it make any difference? I think she is wrong. I know asthma is more reversible but is it copd or asthma I wonder?

Any comments/thoughts would be welcome thanks.
