My own experience is that it lasts a few minutes. When I've had it done I get weighed, measured then blow three times into the device starting with a hard 'push' of air then continuing as long as you can (usually in my experience culminating in a coughing fit!).

Others better qualified than me can tell you what it actually measures but I believe it's peak flow, forced expiry volume (I think that's how much you can blow out in a second) & other lung capacity measurements.

Apologies for my highly un-scientific explanation!

I had my yearly spiro yesterday. Is horrible, tiring and makes me cough! You have to blow 3x into tube then take reliever wait a few mins then blow 3x again.

However is useful to keep an eye on how things going - I had small improvement since last year so pleased about that.

NB make sure HCA puts correct details into computer or you have to do it again! Happened to me last year. LOL.
