My hubby Pete has COPD and also sarcoidosis and he sleeps quite a lot too. He has no problems going to bed either but we put it down to his disease and the drugs he takes. I hope you will get some good advice from someone soon or maybe contact the BLF nurses and see if they can come up with something. Good luck to you Shirley. xxx
Hi, I also could sleep standing up, I don't sleep well at night due to illness but I could sleep on and off all day 😕 it drives me mad, I put it down to all the tablets I take
Have you been checked for CO2 retention or sleep apnoea? Both these conditions cause extreme sleepiness.
I used to be sleepy all the time - do you have headaches too? I was eventually diagnosed as a CO2 retainer and given a BiPap machine which I use every night. It involves wearing a close fitting mask, and is not particularly comfortable, but I got used to it because the improvement was dramatic so it was worth persevering. I believe the treatment for sleep apnoea is similar but with a CPap - sorry, I can never remember what all these initials stand for so can't explain further.
I expect someone else will be along with better information soon, but you could call the BLF helpline where there are expert respiratory nurses who will be able to give you professional advice - probably not till Tuesday now though, as they work usual office hours.
Best of luck with this. Jan
I get very tired. I put this down to the sheer effort of day to day life!!
I am the same Shirley especially after eating. I feel like my head feels too heavy and I am asleep within a minute afte putting a cushion behind my head whilst sat up.I sleep about 6 hours undisturbed at night. I actually feel lucky I don't suffer with insomnia.
thank you joyce
I was the same as you for ages...referred to sleep clinic and diagnosed with sleep apnea. .collect cpap machine Tuesday so will post if helps
Hi Becraftygirl, you are not alone. I sometimes am so tired I feel sick. The slightest bit of heavy work and I need a sleep. However I feel great when I get up early, I put it down to getting older, illness and drugs. Some days I have to push myself to get through all my tasks even sitting down ones, so I appreciate what you are saying. If your nurse has an answer pass it on please I would love to know if it is the COPD. Thanks for raising the topic.
Hi Shirley
I have lung cancer severe COPD and sleep apnea. I am a terrible sleeper I wake at the same time every night regardless of the time I go to bed. I usually have an afternoon nap around 4pm for an hour or two at the most. I get to approximately 9pm then wherever I am sitting I drop off my husband tries to wake me but somehow I can't come back to life for around an hour or so. We call them sleep apnea episodes but have to be careful as I also an a CO2 retainer and have been rushed into hospital on several occasions this year. My chest consultant told me to come off some of my drugs which make it worse. I have had to reduce my morphine. Stop my anti depressants which were given when I was told my cancer is terminal. Also had to stop taking sleeping tablets. I have done all he asked but must admit I am still dropping off regardless.
My community neutron arranged for a bed alarm to be installed which is helping because I would get up to go to bathroom and fall back to sleep on the loo! Sometimes it would be 2 or 3 hours before hubby would wake and find me by then my says dropped very low as I was off oxygen for several hours whilst sleeping.
So the advice I can give you is see what drugs you are taking as they seem convinced reducing them helps.

Glad you put this post on I was wondering if it was just me. Can't believe how tired you get I was told years ago by a doctor your like a car not firing on all cylinders so you will get tierd
Hope it's a Rolls lol x
I'm so glad that I'm not alone!!!
I'm 36 and was diagnosed with COPD 2 years ago. I am now already in the 'severe' phase.
Lately I have just been so tired - I thought I was just becoming lazy, but I often don't even make it to bed - I fall asleep in my armchair sitting bolt upright, which then makes my legs swell up... then I get worried about DVT!!
There's no warning, I don't feel tired, or feel slightly tired and think I'll just have a quick coffee then go to bed - the next thing I know it's 6am!
Frankly it's becoming dangerous - I live alone and fall asleep while I'm cooking. It seems to be getting worse too. I sleep a minimum 9 hours a night, and still fall asleep during the day... the moment I sit down, that's it, I'm gone!
I used to have so much energy - I was the life and soul of any night out - Now I can't even go out, I'm just too tired!
My theory is that everything is 3 times as much effort and hard work than it used to be due to getting less oxygen due to the COPD, and just breathing alone is taking up so much energy... and that is why I'm so tired.
Don't know whether I'm right or not, but that's the only explanation I can think of! Tell you what though... I'm only 36 but I'm starting to feel really, REALLY old!
i know exackly what you mean every thing is just too much trouble its horrid
tells me webb unavailable so when u have time pleasse keep me imformed please
Me too, I sleep all night 9 to 10 hours and still sleepy all day, have a nana nap most afternoons lol
Hi,
I use to be a chronic insomniac before coming ill with respiratory problems. I do have multiple other health issues, but the exhaustion just overtakes things and is all consuming. I sleep all night, although I get wakened up temporarily, sleep in the afternoons and part of the evenings.
I am wondering if you have had a through blood work out done, as many other causes of chronic fatigue can be found this way. I am lacking in vitamin B12 but despite multiple injections there hasn't been any improvement, but maybe you could be anaemic or have some other issue going on. Sorry, I don't want to add to your troubles but it might be worth getting your blood tested, and if you ever find a cause or cure for your tiredness, I would love to hear about it.
Take care,
hugs from Huggs xxx
