Amoxicillin dosage.

Hi everyone,

I've just been diagnosed with Bronchiectasis in both lungs so this is all new to me.

Went to GP last week & was given amoxicillin to help with chest & back pains due to the possibility of an infection, I'm on two 500mg tablets three times a day which adds up to 3000mg a day, I'm not sure if this the dosage as it seems high from what I've researched. Just wondering if anyone else has been told to take such a high dosage as well ?

Hi Dave I'm on Amoxicillin 500mg tablets at the moment and have had them in the past but one three times a day not 2. I should check it out. Let us know what you find out Suzy.

Am on 500mg 3 times aday and doing ok my rank infection is clearing up

Am usaly on 3 aday well 3 in 24 hours and been ok with em

Hi Dave and welcome.

The 'normal' dose for non cf bronchiectasis (guidelines) is 500mg for 14 days but I have on quite a few occasions been prescribed 2x500mg 3 times a day (3g). It is a high dose but not that unusual for bronch if doc things you have a severe infection. As you are worried have a chat with you pharmacist, as suggested. I don't honestly feel you need be that concerned unless doc prescribes this dose all the time. Might be an idea to take a probiotic, though not at the same time as the antibiotic.

Hmm that does sound high... I'm normally on 500mg 3 times daily when I'm having a flare up. In the past my gp suggested that I take a double dose to start with on day one, so 2x500mg once then 1x500 for the nxt two doses. Agree with the others to check the dosage. Good luck

Hi there

With bronchiectasis you need high doses, sometimes for long periods. I have had bronchiectasis for 62 years and have been through the gamut of antibiotics. Because I now am colonised with pseudomonas amoxicillin doesn

't work any more but in the 1980s I would take two 3000mg sachets each day for two to three weeks at a time. We aren't like the ordinary folk. We need something to bash those bugs on the head. And please remember, all the antibiotics in the world are no good if you don't cough it up. Good luck, stay well.

I was on 2x500mg 3 times a day but have now been put on nebulised Colomycin 1IU twice daily, this is mainly due to a Pseudamonas infection that wont go away.

I have just finished a course 500mg 3 times a day for a chest infection I have COPD.

Never mind just wanted to say it's my 3rd course of anti-bi's since Xmas despite being on daily penicillin and Clarithromycin 3 times a week.

Firstly I would like to say a great big thank you to you all for your great responses to my question, such amazing feedback THANK YOU :0).

I was diagnosed with Bronchiectasis in both lungs on the 24th of February this year after a CT scan due to coughing up lots of blood over 5 days over the new year.

I didn't know anything about it & the Doctor at the respitory clinic told me to google the diagnosis as she had no info there to give me. I found this site by chance & I'm really glad I did as don't feel so alone knowing people like you out there to share your experiences & give help & advice to me, thanks again everyone.

I phoned my doctors about my amoxicillin dosage today & was told it was the right dosage at this time so will finish the course off. Think I will still have a chat with the pharmacist when I collect the rest of the amoxicillin tomorrow as I'm still not 100% sure & reading your comments makes me trust you more.

Dave your pharmacist may say the dose is too high...but as some of the others above have said with Broch you have to hit the bugs HARD.. I have been on antibiotics like some of the other Broch sufferers on this site ever since antibiotics were first prescribed by the NHS...half the problem of why I got worse I think is that once doctors were very reluctant to ive out ab's and you HAD to have an appointment each time to get a prescription and you were NEVER given a stand by prescription...and the doses were only for 250gm for 10 days ...now you get ab's until the infection has cleared

Over the years amoxcillin did cease to work for me, and at that time I was (like Stillstandin 63) on 3 grams sachets twice a day .....so you are on the correct dose I would say to get rid of your infection

I am now on Azithromycin as a prophylactic and co-amoxiclav as my stand by ab

You have a long way to get to that stage Dave...so talk to your pharmacist if it makes you feel happy, but you have queried it with your doctor, he says its the dosage he ordered I would take it now and I hope you get better soon

And do take a pro biotic if you are taking ab's always wise
