Hi everyone, I have just been informed my my doctor, that I have an ovarian cyst, and have to see a gynaecologist. My question is because I have COPD. and I know I may have to have surgery , if anyone out there has had a general Anaesthetic, and how were they afterwards, I know we are all different people, but and we all react in different ways but I find myself getting more and more upset and thinking the worst I have always been such a strong person but this news from my doctor has floored me , any words of encouragement or advice would be much appreciated thanking you

Hi Meike, I don't know enough to be of any real help, but happy to offer encouragement and support. I would suggest you phone the BLF helpline (03000 030 555) first thing Monday. They aren't available at the weekend, but I am sure they would be able to advise and reassure you.
I know doctors are cautious about giving general anaesthetics to COPD patients, but they seem to be able to do all sorts of surgery using localised anaesthetics these days, so I wonder if the op you would need could be one of them? As I said, I don’t know enough about it, so sorry if that’s a stupid idea.
Has your doctor organised the appointment with the gynaecologist? I hope you don't have to wait too long for it.
I know it’s not easy with something like this on your mind, but try not to worry too much, and do phone the helpline on Monday. Let us know how you get on. I shall be thinking of you over the weekend and sending lots of positive, supportive thoughts your way.
All the best, Jan
Hi Meike,
No problems at all with a GA. They "tube" you while you're asleep anyway, so there's no need to worry. I have had many, many GA's and never had any problems with them. Your GP/ Consultant wouldn't let you have this if they thought it wasn't safe anyway. Stop worrying and just look forward to how happy and relieved you'll be when it's over! Good luck. XXX
I am waiting for a procedure on my arm they would normally knock you out for this but when I went for my Anaesthetic assessment { pre-op } because of my COPD it came up red so I'm have a total block where the numb the arm and I will be awake you need to talk to the pre op assessment nurse but good luck
Just got back to replying to you lovely people. I am waiting to see the main man/women consultant, my cyst is quite large so I am hoping I will been seen quickly, and I shall be asking about the operation and how they intend to do it, but I must admit I am more than anxious about it, the sooner I get it over with the better, keep well everyone, I will let you know the outcome .
