I thought this was a UK site but I have just had instructions on COPD from a USA site, so what is HealthUnlocked, English or American???

jackdup, Interesting about shower with an oxygen tube. But I am not on oxygen, so I cannot have a shower. What I do is to wash myself by the sink. I wash my top and dry, not to become short of breath through cold. I then wash the bottom and dry it. This helps me.

But to combat my illness, others will know because they do likewise, I go to the gym 3 times a week and I have started to learn playing the flute. The flute is a very powerful instrument. You have to play standing, which is good in general. You have to adopt a good posture to breathe well and have no tension. To breathe into the flute, you need to purse your lips somehow. this is extraordinary to strengthen the lungs. I've only started so cannot comment on the gained strength, but I certainly can comment on the posture to adopt. Indeed, i am reading a book on the Alexander technique to free myself of all tension. Highly recommended! Mic

That is fantastic Mic well done and music is so uplifting too. Pilates is also a superb form of exercise for posture breathing and muscle control - though playing the flute is most impressive

31m3aR, Indeed. I would encourage any form of exercise to to try to stop the progress of our lung diseases. It's a medical proven factor that exercises reversses the chronic trends of our illnesses. Iyt has also been testified by many of us who devote some time to exercises, even though we might still get attacked by "community bugs" I'd like those bugs to stay outside as much as possible :-)

Well done Mic. It must be very exciting, especially with a flute. How long did it take to produce your first sound? Are you able to play a tune yet? Today passed a charity shop selling trumpets and it went through my mind if that was a clarinet might have a try. Anyway keep practising and all best wishes for improving your help barnowl
