Hi went to see my gp yesterday, saw a different one mine is on maternity leave,i asked her

with her and think anything that can get your lungs working can only be good, have others found

excersise helpful.

Hi Mandy 6513 I must admit I did,nt like her attitude, do,nt want to see her again.

in reply toMalie

thing is she is giving out the wrong advice so she will be telling other people the same thing

perhaps a call to the patient manager at your surgery is needed she is giving out bad and wrong information and i agree i wouldnt be seeing her again either if i were you

Oh Malie you need to refer her to BLF site, she needs a referral to learn for her patients lung conditions and help required.Take carex

Needs reporting. If she is giving out messages like that .

healthline.com/health/copd/... its our right for a referral so tell her that,, and to move herself, in the mean time stay as active as you can, walk for an hour daily, if your out of breath slow down and start again, just stay active, and tell her any more of this and you will report her, I was told its our copd so were in charge and the n, I, c ,e, guidelines says we have to be treated with care and respect ,,, and give the blf a call Monday at 9 am, and chat to a nurse,, 03000 030 555, in fact Monday morning I,d get down there or ring and say its my rights so refer me asap, don't let them talk to you like that ,, you no is it any wonder the blf nurses are run of there feet , with stupid dcs like her,, anyways good luck ye,, xx

Obviously this GP was off the month that her class did pulmonary medicine. This need reporting. If the Practice Manager does not respond then take it further. This GP could be shortening patients lives with this ludicrous drivel. Regards Rib

How negative. don't bother going back what a ridiculous thing to say, exercise does work without doubt as long as you learn how to safely via a PR course. I wouldn't normally say this as we're not professionals but listen to us not the doctor she's an idiot.

Yes, its the most basic knowledge you can have about copd.

But what's all this bricklayer stuff? Do we have to use class stereotypes to convey stupidity? Surely not :)

FarmerD profile image
FarmerD in reply toO2Trees

I don,t think the implication is stupidity, maybe only in your mind, but that they have or should have entirely different skills!

O2Trees profile image
O2Trees in reply toFarmerD

No not in my mind farmer - I have brickie friends so i know better than that.

i agree about different skills which should be respected. So why use "bricklayer" to describe someone who is clearly pretty useless at her job? Doesnt make sense.

FarmerD profile image
FarmerD in reply toO2Trees

It is you who choose to see it that way,I don,t see it as disparaging to bricklayers skills at all.If anything it implies the doctor would be better building a wall than treating a patient.

O2Trees profile image
O2Trees in reply toFarmerD

Well I may be wrong but i don't think it was being used above to say the doc would be better as a bricklayer. Rather it seemed to be used to express contempt at the doctor's inadequacies.

So I guess we must agree to disagree, no point in continuing this.

I must admit I,m quite sceptical when it comes to doctors, half the time I,d rather trust

my vet, good thing really as if I believed her, that attitude would be a bit disheartening.

I asked a Consultant a similar question about whether exercise could improve my airways. I was told no they would not improve but being fitter would help my ability to manage.

God help us!!!! This God with a small gee you understand! For goodness sake this GP definitely needs updating! Exercise is good for EVERYONE, whether they have a health issue or not!

And for COPD IT IS VITAL, there is so much research information about how exercise makes a difference. It reduces exacerbations, helps with changing our mood for the better and helps our muscles use oxygen more efficiently. I reckon it adds a boost to our immune system as well.

So do pass info onto her and set her right, and then ask for a referral off assessment by your local Pulmonary Rehabilitation Team.

Let us know how you get on. :-) have a brilliant day.

Hi Malie

I have IPF and and being treated by Papworth and the advice I get from my consultant is exercise as much as possible but within your limits. Without exercise this disease would drive me mad. Your doctor seems clueless. BLF website has loads of info.

You need to change your doctor. That is truly shocking advice. Exercise is one of the most important things to help you to manage your conditions

This Dr. is living in the dark ages, she needs a wake up call a.s.a.p.

Exercise also releases endorphins in your brain...makes you feel good factor! give that doc a miss next time :) huff xxx

Its a known factor that exercise is good for your lungs even if only chair exercises. I felt better with PR but it did effect my other health problems it is difficult to get a happy medium if you have more than one illness, most doctors proceed with caution in respect of who exercise will benefit. But don't give up ask again even if only to give it a try to see if it helps you. Good luck.

Hi Malie

Makes you wonder how some GPs are able to practice medicine. Personally since I started swimming and getting excersiSe I feel a lot bette. What exactly do we go to pulmonary rehab is it not to get some exercise? Put a complaint in

2malinka profile image

She's sounds dangerous! I certainly wouldn't be seeing her again.

Even a non medic would know that exercise is the one thing that keeps COPD sufferers going.

All the best.

For what it's worth from the US, I agree with all the others have said; I'm just now joining a gym and doing more yard work and the more I do physically, the more I CAN do physically. Your doc is 'blowing in the wind' and doesn't seem to understand the basics of life..., COPD or not...!!!

helingmic profile image

Oh dear, Malie. I am a strong believer in exercises because it saved me, gym, walk, pulmonary rehabilitation especially> Can you ask to be referred to a pulmonary nurse. She will be far more sympathetic to you than that doctor. Ask to be referred, it's their job to do so. if not complain! Have you been referred to a consultant? You could ask for that kind of referral too. That will put you in more understanding hands than that person (one wonders sometimes how they get their qualification!)

I can't believe this she sounds like my old DR when I was diagnosed I was given a blue inhaler and told to go home and stop smoking.

Knowledge is power and exercise is the best thing we can do I know with some of us its more difficult and some of us have more problems than COPD I think it is safe to say that DR's do not know everything I'm shocked at this flippant remark

As has been said this doctor should be reported to the practise manager for giving out wrong and dangerous information .you should exercise as much as you can with our condition and eat healthily.Good luck.D.

If You feel like exercising GO FOR IT. If You get tired, rest. I see it like this, ANYTHING A DOCTOR TELLS US IS A THEORY BASED ON BOOKS. Unless that GP has had the personal experience of whatever, then it's just a theory, period. My Pulmonary Dr. tells Me I should keep My oxygen intake to 2 liters. I feel better with 2.5 & 3 (depending). I asked Him if He knows it for a fact or is it His opinion. He smiled & said, "If You feel better using more, then You should use more." :)

Is she really qualified as a doctor or a Quak.

Hi Malie, I agree totally that exercise helps. I have asthma and bronchiectasis and I am also disabled with a bad foot and arthritis so I exercise by doing Aqua. The swimming pool/swimming helps with the asthma and the exercise works for the arthritis. I also feel pretty amazing afterwards. The feel good factor is something I can not do without. Take care Maximonkey
