Hi I was diagnosed with IPF about 3years ago and have had a really bad cough for a few weeks , woke up yesterday with ,what looks like a huge purple bruise under my arm pit has this happened to anyone else I wonder whether it's just with me coughing a lot

I have copd . Prior to diagnosis and before I quit smoking I had a really bad cough. During a coughing fit I actually saw a purple blood " blister " appear under the skin across the top of my hand saw it spread (about 2 inches ) whilst gripping the bathroom basin. It disappeared after 2/3 days and assumed I had burst a small blood vessel with the force of coughing. I know that this can happen in the nose or throat .

However I think that you should probably see your doctor as you may need antibiotics for your cough .....which you say you've had for a few weeks . When I eventually saw my doctor it turned out to be a chest infection .

Even if your bruise has disappeared by the time you see the doctor I would mention it if only for your own peace of mind .

Thank you for your reply I just couldn't understand how it just appeared, also after coughing I have chronic pain in right ribs which sometimes goes instantly and others prolonged

I can easily burst the blood vessels in my eyes after a bad coughing bout,not nice.it leaves me with blood shot eyes for a couple of days.i also feel like I have bruised ribs.

hello there Jambo sorry to hear you are having such problems . not nice at all and blood shot eyes ,not nice for you .First thing is to cough less stay away from things that make you cough and I hope you are NOT a smoker maybe you could clear your throat clearing it without coughing. But you must seek your doctors advise who may refer you to an optician any way best wishes hope it gets better in the near future

Thanks for the advice oxytic,unfortunately it's part and parcel of this dreaded IPF.I'm a non smoker,24hr oxygen,these illnesses aren't nice are they.
