Mum has had a PET scan and a biopsy she has a tumour in her right lower lobe of lung but Dr says they cannot operate it's too risky and not keen to give her toxins that they make her more ill, so what are her options?? Anyone help??

This is a difficult question to answer, Tusk. My husband, Brian, has terminal cancer prostate. He has had loads of very invasive treatment which has now been stopped since all had been done and nothing worked. It makes me wonder if it hadn't better if he hadn't had any treatment. Brian is 80, too.

With your mother, how does she feel about things. If I may venture an opinion. would the side effects from any treatment, give her more discomfort than she already has. You do have my best wishes xx

Hi thanks for reply and so sorry to hear about your husband. My mum doesn't think by what they have said so far that they are going to offer much in the way of treatment due to other problems. She has recently been in hospital for the first time in 45 yrs with a tear in her aorta and they found she also has an abdominal aortic aneursym that is also inoperable. She has some emphysema in the lung with cancer too. We are now waiting for the next aptonce biospy results are back next week but they are in no doubt it is cancer. I am wondering and have been scouring the interent now, how long my mum will have if no treatment is given, a very hard question I know for anyone to answer but if anyone else has been in this position I would be pleased to hear.

Kind Regards

You did fine, tusk. I saw the message wherever it was meant to be. Doesn't make any difference.

I have asked the very same question of people, how long, and son and daughter have asked me. I am afraid it is a hard question to which nobody can give an answer - not even the medics. I feel there is much to be said for "one day at a time". Appreciate each moment and remember. xx

That is a good answer, one day at a time, however, we would all rather know even my mum. Some say 11 mths - 2yrs with no treatment but I am not sure what to believe, we will ask Dr's next week but like you said they may be unable to really say. We know lung cancer is bad and mostly a death sentence so if they told us we wouldn't be shocked. We know it is more than 6 mths hopefully.

Kind Regards

I think, Tusk, that by thinking and talking to counsellors and other wise people that you will get a special frame of mind to cope with any situation that might occur. I am a realist. I know what will happen to Brian and I will cope because I have to. You can always PM me for a chat between thee and me. But it is a difficult time for both of us. Dont be alone xx

Many thanks. I will wait to see what they say next week when biopsy results back and then will be back in touch. Take care. x
