Oh bless you! I'm a serial user of LOL and that probably annoys some people! It's hard to know some of the shortcuts and abbreviations - having a teenage son for me helps greatly! :) x

I thought it swung both ways. My father a few years ago used it too express affection in his textes. But of late it appears to be used for laughing your derriere OFF LOL. and lol( lots of love) too everyone x

It it makes you feel any better my mum (75) used it at the end of conversations, believing it meant lots of love, when chatting online to a 20 year old, which gave rise to some rather mixed messages! She was mortified when she discovered its actual meaning! :-)

Easy mistake Bliss. I think pretty much everyone sussed it pretty quickly and knew you were just being warm and caring.

Perhaps Health Unlocked should have a reference guide for all communities that tells users what these abbreviations mean? Any time someone types LOL or whatever it could pop up and say what the accepted meaning was ? I've seen it happen on other sites. Just an idea.
