I take it - it tricks the brain into thinking that I'm not really breathless. It's also addictive, being an opiate...

what is oramorph ?

Morphine sulphate. It is actually a pain killer but is great at improving breathing. I take it before and after exertion. It really works and not addictive.

It is an opiate which helps when breathing becomes distressing. I am currently being assessed for the correct dosage by my consultant.

Oramorph is magic juice. It stopped me having funny turns whenever I coughed. Probably the most effective medication I've ever taken. My occupational therapist assured me that although it is morphine (opiate) based it is too weak to be addictive. You would have to drink it by the bucket load for any narcotic effect.

Keep on breathing folks!

I'm sorry Morrid but Morphine Sulphate is HIGHLY ADDICTIVE. Any opiate is so.

Tried oramorph for my IPF cough which is persistent. Made me sick I am afraid which I found worse than coughing. Popplewell

I was given oramorph when I was in hospital a year ago: it did help but like you it made me feel sick (something which I do not deal with). However I was given an anti-sickness tablet (or was it medicine) that worked well to counteract the sickness. I was given oramorph to bring home by the hospital, but not the anti-sickness medication so as a result I have never used it. Perhaps I will ask my GP about prescribing this if it is so good. My coughing has certainly increased and any help would be good.

I was given morphine tablets 12 hour release and when I had the flu and could not get to my GP I went cold turkey and it was not nice

I had a foot operation 3 years ago and was on morphine injections for 3 days when they sent me home. I was given a bottle of Oramorph to take home with me. I used it for that day and 1 more then I threw it away as I was violently sick with it. It is now on my list of medicine allergies. It is also very addictive, as it is a opiate. I could do with something for my cough at the moment but it certainly won't be Oramorph. Cheryl

i have been prescribed oramorph 5mls ever 4-6 hours, for an underlying illness for pain and for help in my breathing for copd, i find it does help both these things, but often gives me a better nights sleep.

There is some inaccurate information on this thread. Oramorph is frequently and extremely safely used for copd patients and for other conditions which may affect breathing ( i.e. lung cancer ) particularly those in the latter stages of the disease. It helps enormously with the feelings of breathlessness and would never, ever be prescribed without careful consideration of all the factors. As with all information given on forums, have a look yourself on the internet (UK) to get a true picture, and not pick out the first article you see which has nothing whatsoever to do with your condition. Speak to your gp/consultant. As has been demonstrated on this thread, a lot of people have been prescribed oramorph, some can't tolerate it, some benefit greatly.

Thank you for this. My consultant has referred me to someone so that I can be assessed for Oramorph to help my breathing and I was beginning to get worried!

Hurray, I've helped someone! I hope your assessment goes well Toci and you are able to tolerate the Oramorph. If so, you should find your life that bit easier and eve a tiny improvement makes all the difference with this terrible disease. Good luck! x

I use it for bad days, its wonderful.. So relaxing, its very very mild, for my Stge 4 Emphysema..

Its so mild and "its non addictive" - I can go for weeks n weeks till my breathing is terrible, again.. Has given me 2 more years of life, so far....Jxx
