End stage COPD care

My mum is in hospital at the moment critically ill. She was admitted on Friday afternoon having been unwell for a month with a chest infection. We have been told to expect the worst but hope for the best. At first she was not put on the Bipap machine but is on it now and yesterday afternoon managed to cough up a lot of the awful mucus. Despite her only weighing 5st I believe she might pull through. The doctors have said because they are treating the Copd and not the chest infection there is little hope. Her heart rate is high and fluctuating but high blood pressure for her is relatively normal. she believes she will get better and has not given up but is doing her best to keep going.

Our family have all gathered from far and wide to be with her now. Has anyone come this close and survived and if so? How has life been since? Is Hospice care recommended?

Hello mayflower53

Have you asked why she isn't on antibiotics?

I haven't got any answers to your questions regarding recovery and hospice care. There are many questions that need to be addressed, such as, is your mom well enough to be moved to a hospice? There will be many more coming on to offer you advise and support, also, if you click on the red balloon you can ask the blf. In the meantime your mom, you and all your family are in my prayers. mustcarryon. xxx

Thinking of you all Mayflower, it's wonderful that your mum has a loving family around her.

Several people here have been extremely ill and come back from the brink, however, it may have been for other reasons. Bless you all.

My thoughts and kindest wishes are with you and your family. Keep strong and although I cant answer your questions I hope that your Mum can pull through for you. With much love TAD xx

I have no idea why they would not be treating the infection. Have you asked what the reason is? Others have been in similar situations and pulled through. Keep praying, loving and hoping. xxx

Sorry about your Mum, but as others have asked, are they treating the infection?

When my father was ill with pneumonia they asked my mother if she wanted him to be given antibiotics as he incapacitated after a stroke.

Thinking of you all.

Yes thinking of you, your Mum sounds strong, surely the infection should be treated, but guess the doctors know best, but would be nice to know why. Keep chin up xxx Keep us informed

Sorry to hear about your Mum. It's not that long ago I was in the same situation so I know how you feel. We fought alongside my Mum and she went on for another four years. They wanted her to go into a home but we all rallied round and had her home. I definately would be asking why they are not treating the infection and unless they give you a good reason I would push for it. Good luck.

As others have said, why are they not treating the infection? You need to be asking questions & pushing for the correct treatment. I will keep you & your mum in my thoughts & prayers.

Best wishes

Thank you everyone. I mislead you when I said the doctors were not treating the infection, they are, and she is on antibiotics intravenously, but they told us the infection was only mild and it was the copd and a very erratic heart that was causing her breathlessness. But the best thing of all, today she is much better!!!! Still on the Bipap machine and she will be dependant on it for sometime yet but she is out of danger. We are all so relieved. Still along way to go before she can come home but its a miracle. Thank you again for all your kind words, prayers and well wishes.

What wonderful news Mayflower, you must be over the moon, all good wishes & love to you & your Mum xxx

Hi, I am 62 and went in hospital in January this year, immediately put on bipap but my family were warned I was seriously ill and not to be too hopeful. I was home in 8 days and am still here. Not good admittedly but still getting about. xx Sue E
