I put in a claim for esa and sent in a dr's note when making the claim on the phone I was told that I would have to have a medical by atos, when I asked why as my GP had made the diagnosis after I had undergone the tests I was told that their doctors wont agree with mine. Now worried about medical has anyone got any advice please. I'm a 57 yo male.

Hi carling, welcome.
It is difficult, the atos people are more focussed on establishing if your illness prevents you from working. Some with COPD are still working full time others not at all. Some people have more than one illness that affects them and may prevent them from working. Atos medical is not just for lung patients it covers all illnesses and disabilities.
Hopefully you will have included every detail concerning your illness/s not just the diagnosis of copd but also how your illness affects you day to day.
I think the phone call comes 1st before the medical, so just tell like it is when you are at your worst.
I wish you good luck and keeping my fingers crossed you won't be called for the medical, not everyone is.
If you are called, contact the BLF helpline and ask for advice to help get you through this, click on the red balloon top right for their contact details, the helpline is open normal working week days 10 am to 5pm.
All good wishes BC
Thank you BlakeyC for the info. I get a little worried when you read some of the horror stories about atos and their medicals i.e man with large brain tumour told fit for work and examined by a midwife etc. Will keep you posted and no doubt be asking more questions.
I wish you all the best of luck I think your GP's word should be good enough he see's you more and knows more about you than some Dr / Nurse / hospital porter who is employed by ATOS i'm in the middle of writing a letter to my MP I feel COPD is a long tem illness that will never get any better and think anyone who diagnosed with COPD should be given benefits automatically and this is what i'm putting in this letter so watch this space
