It has a different effect on each of us. Some are very debilitated and others can continue working. Just be happy you can still do so much! :)

Yes that's what the nurse says, I'm retired now and she says I have to keep fit.

Thanks for the reply.

Good morning. Keep feeling great, Don't feel confused or worry. Worrying is like a rocking chair, it gives you something to do, but doesen't get you anywhere. Nannyb x

How true, I am a terrible worrier, and find it so difficult to switch off. I envy those people who can literally take each day as it comes. I try to, but I'm always worrying about tomorrow, and that never comes.!

Great fantastic ! You are doing all the right things and keeping fit! Don't be confused be grateful! Each sufferer is different with this condition. I truly believe if my husband had kept fit and gone to the gym three times a week he would not be so breathless! Long may you be as fit! with love and admiration TAD xx

Wahoo, keep the walking/gym work up! It really makes a difference, especially through the winter. :-)

breatherβ€’ in reply toPollyP

Yes it's a good walk where I go. Thanks pollyp.

That's great news for you if you can achieve 5 miles 3 x weekly and gym.

Keep up the good work, maybe when the weather is too cold, too wet, do your walking on the gym's treadmill unless you have one at home, (even better).

Check with your respiratory nurse for advice about walking 5 miles in freezing winter weather to be sure you don't set yourself up for complications in lung health. Or, if you live in the UK, you could check with BLF helpline about this, click red balloon top right for contact details.

Welcome and best wishes

Dear breather, Welcome to our group!

I go 3 times a week to the gym too. My consultant keeps telling me that I have damaged lungs! Well! I did catch pneumonia and the presence of a TB-like bacteria too! So my consultant gave me a couple of antibiotics to take on a permanent level.

Damaged lungs make you more vulnerable to infections. So try and keep away from coughing people. But Hey ho, it's a great day at the gym - especially when the weather is terrible! It feels better on one of those weight machines, doesn't it? Keep it up, just be cautious of not getting any infection. Good to have you here, tell us more of your progress!

I'v been going to the gym for a long time now. I'v always been fit so it was a shock when they said I have emphysema. And I feel good really. Thanks Helingmic.

Sounds good news to me breather, you are as healthy as can be, given that you have emphysema. They say that exercise helps to keep the stamina level up in these types of illness. Avoiding people who cough reduces infection risk, but some of us have coughs as a symptom of lung disease and are not infectious .Good luck with keeping healthy and welcome to the site.

Hi breather, 54% would put you in the moderate (stage 2) category but you are still doing really well and if you keep it up you will slow down any progression of the disease considerably. Here is a useful link for you which should be helpful to you.

Hi breather, how lucky you are to be feeling so fit, its all down to your good management of the condition so keep up the good work, I have 40% lung function and have been told I am severe emphysema, I have done a PR course and do regular exercise and I feel reasonabley well most of the time so I think the secret is lots of activity if you can, take care and welcome. x

My consultant says I'm only transferring 20% of the oxygen from lungs into my bloodstream, yes I do get breathless but I'm still working and trying to carry on as normal as possible. The adage is use it or lose it. I've done Pulmonary Rehab and it works.
